can you smog a single turbo fd in CA?
ive been looking into a single turbo upgrade recently while my motor is getting its stage 3 race port and im looking into finding one that will work with a smog pump, i had mine removed with the pulley kit but id like to put it back on when my car comes back from the shop. does anyone know of a single turbo kit that will use the factory smog pump? also has anyone been able to smog theyre 3rd gen rx7 in CA with a single turbo upgrade? if so what did you do to get it to pass smog? im looking for 350 rwhp smog able and i would prefer a nice lil ball bearing single turbo- also im looking into the hks fcon ecu or apexi power fc- id like to see what people think of these units that have them in use- any help would be appreciated

There is no way to pass CA smog legally while running a single turbo.
These kits may allow you to keep the air pump:
1. All HKS kits, even the T51, I think
2. A-Spec GT35R might let you keep it (check first to be sure)
3. The latest RX6 kit from A'PEXi may allow you to keep the air pump (if you are looking for a good deal, Super Autobacs in Stanton, SoCal is selling the one in their display case for $2800)
You want small ball-bearing, so the GT35R or RX6 are probably your best options. The T04E kit from HKS is very much in line with your power goals, too, however.
The best choice for your ECU (and you will absolutely need a new one) is the PowerFC. Nothing else even comes close for your needs as described here.

From Rotary Extreme's website..."This kit allows you to keep the air pump."

Rotary extreme has installed a few, from what I understand, and the kit even comes with a casted crossover pipe to clear the air pump.
I'm sure Lupe could chime in, since he has the kit.
