BOV placement??

I am wondering on what IC pipe should the bov be placed? I had some issues with my bov being close to the TB and now wonder if I should place it on the IC pipe coming from the turbo to the IC? Thanks

Fluid dynamics would say it is better between the IC and TB.
When it discharges, you want the flow to be in the same direction as when the engine is boosting. If it flows towards the turbo, then it will have to be reversed by the turbo coming on boost.

You did not explain your issues.

I had my turbo rebuilt by mike turbo and had the car tuned. After the tune we noticed there was shaft play. When I spoke to mike turbo it was recomended that the bov be placed near the turbo. I am unaware of my old bov size other than it being an old hks race bov. With my new setup and 50mm bov I'd like to avoid any previous issues.

We can debate the theoretical optimal placement for a BOV, but BOV placement causing shaft play? That's a bit of a stretch, especially since the factory BOV on the 2nd and 3rd gen cars was placed before the intercooler.

My thought is to quickly bleed the compressor just enough to offset going into the stall area, and at the same time not wasting any intercooled air.

Can you see my BOV hanging on the compressor outlet pipe?

Probably doesn't make a lot of difference. Where do you have the most room? ARGHX doesn't run one.

The BOV works best if it is placed in a high-pressure / low-velocity area of the pipe, which would mean either right next to the throttle body or right next to the turbo. Unless there is simply no other place that it will fit, try to avoid putting it in a low-pressure / high-velocity area like the middle of a long straight pipe.

There is no way in Hell that a good newly-built turbo could get its shaft ruined by reversion waves during tuning, even with a completely nonfunctional BOV. Is your turbo one of those cheapie Chinese or Mexican Ebay turbos?

proper BOV placement is in a parts bin and not on your car... I went there

wherever is more convenient

if you look at Subarus, they have their BOV's mounted directly to the end tank of their factory intercoolers. So there's nothing wrong with that placement.

Put it where you like, really makes little odds. I prefer the trash can or ebay.

If you just want to prevent compressor surge when lifting the throttle, as close to the compressor wheel is clearly the best place.

But ive rarely ever seen a car where BOV placement of even a BOV full stop is even an issue worth thinking about in comparison to all the other less than optimal things.
