Blown 35R

Lost all power on the freeway last night.
I was cruising at 80 mph in 4th gear getting ready to tear a BMW a new one and it felt like a typical hose coming off under boost scenario, got home and took the air filter off and the shaft and blades were all flopping around inside the housing.
Car dives fine, vacumm looked normal and was able to drive 45 miles home, the car started this morning without a issue,so what am I looking at? what caused it?
I will pull the turbo and take a good look over the weekend, meanwhile I have spoken to a approved Garrett rebuilder by phone and they want $1200 to fix it!,may as well buy a new unit at that cost, anyone have a recommendation for a turbo rebuilder I would appreciate it.

There's no rebuilding a GT35R.. and if you find someone capable it's not worth it.. Better off buying a new center section..

Cause is usually lack of oil..

I had a oil return line leak going back into the motor so it is possible.
A thread talking about replacing the center section

35 rebuild

I just had to rebuild my Gt3582r after having a bearing failure, Both wheels hit and did slight damage to the housings also. Sent it back to ATP turbo, thats where the shop I used purchased the turbo from for me. ATP inspected it gave a full report of the inspection and possible cause of failure and determined it needed a new CHRA, obviously wheels and the housings re-machined due to the damage. I just received it back and it was $660.00 with the shipping and Garrett gave ATP a $275 dollar credit towards the repair. I was out of the warranty period time wise but mileage was low so they seemed to work with me some what. I have a new warranty going forward on the rebuild. Hope this helps you with your decision.

A few weeks before I fixed a leak coming from the oil feed line it turned out the little brass fitting had cracked inside the fitting coming from the block, allowing enough oil out to starve the turbo...my fault not the turbo.
I had had run as much as 20lbs of boost during that time not that it makes any difference,I,m surprised it I lasted as long as it did!

I've had ones I was able to send through theexchangeprogram, others like the last one I did were too damaged and I had to buy a new cartridge. The Garrett GT series are pretty stout turbos so unless you send a seal through them or starve them of oil, they hold up pretty well.
