Blowing oil on T-78
Blowing oil on T-78
Hey guys wondering if you can help me out on this one.
I just installed a greddy T78 kit on my car and when I stay into the boost (15psi) and let off ..coast.. then I give it throttle a HUGE plume of smoke comes out of the exhuast. I know it was oil because one of my friends was following me and he said it got all over his car and it smelled like oil too. I can also see my oil pressure guage rise to the top when boost is coming on.
I have searched for this problem and came to the conclusion that:
1. I hooked up my t-78 Kit wrong and the oil pressure is leaking past the turbo seals and misting into the intake system and causing the smoke, or the oil return line on the turbo is kinked or clogged.
2. Another thing I read was that I should have a restrictor in the oil line and that the 13b-REW produces so much oil pressure that it could leak past the turbo seals. But wouldn't Greddy already think of this and include it into the kit?
Any thoughts on this?

Classic symptoms of not having a restrictor pill in the oil line and using a BB turbo.

buckeyeauto - you know, im's not sure either, but I have two friends here in town both with T78's. The one with the restrictor pill has no smoke after a run, the one w/out a restrictor gets oil smoke.
Hopefully 9000rpm or R-Magic can jump on this thread and answer your where does the restictor pill go question because I'm not sure ... I don't get to go single till next month...

Scott, Wouldnt the restrictor pill go into the oil inlet line to the turbo? I thought that the line leading out of the turbo should be big and have no restrictions so the oil would not back up under high pressure. I'm taking my car apart today. If I find anything I'll let everyone know.

Bad dog, the install for the FMIC and the radiator took a long time. There was a big difference when I switched to the front mount over the PFS unit. I was getting on it on Sunday and thought it wasn't that much better then my PFC SMIC. I later found out that night that the coupler on the turbo housing had come off from one of greddys shitty clamps. Reconnected it with some screw type clamps and noticed a big difference. Maybe thats why my car was smoking in the begining. Who knows. I will keep everyone informed on what I found out.

By the way Jason is running a T-78 too.

I had a T88 turbo kit(in the middle of installing another kit on my new FD) on my old FD(same install as a T78), and I just installed it the way it came, with nothing else added, and never had this problem, maybe the turbo has an internal problem.
