Bin Laden & turbos?
Bin Laden & turbos?
anybody notice the huge garret turbo that the camera guy filming the bin laden tape was fascinated with?
in the part of the tape where the camera man is outside filming the crashed US helicopter, they show the helicopter engine (looks like some kind of boxer) with a HUGE turbo mounted to it, with the letters garret on the compressor. anybody know what size turbo this is? specs?

I didn't see it.
I couldn't have been a turbocharger because internal combustion military helicopter engines went out in the 50's. It was either an APU (Auxiliary Power Unit - basically it means "starter"), or it was the turbine engine itself. It was probably an APU because I don't know of any Garrett helicopter turbine engines. Do you know what kind of helicopter it was?

If you guys are interested in big military turbos, surplus tank turbos sell on E-bay from time to time. I know a guy who got one for $100.
FYI, this is what a turbocharged helicopter looks like. I don't think that you will find too many of these in the American military arsenal.

I found a pic of one of those military surplus tank turbos:
