I have been reading a ton of threads about big *** turbos, and I am trying to decide in the future what I want. I want to be able to make a lot of power, and have as least lag as possible, while having a reliable turbo capable of high PSI in some situations. What are your opinions of these turbos? If none of the above then post what kind and why? I would also like to maintain a decent price.

 

Well, it won't let me post a poll but I was looking at turbos like the R85, Greddy T-78/T-88, HKS T51R, Gt40R, T-61, etc. I mean there are so many to choose from, how do you choose?

everyone wants the biggest turbo with the least amount of lag. Its the whole freakin idea.

anyways, the gt42 is probably the biggest with little lag available. and it makes gobs of power... too bad its not easy on the wallet or one would be sitting under my hood.

I have a t78 under my hood and i love it. I feel the spool is good if your not in too high of a gear. The power capability is more then needed for a street car. If you are really worried about lag, I would probably go with a turbo with ball bearings to have the best spool/size ratio. Of course, these turbos are an *** load of money, and tend to be rediculous in price if you need to rebuild.
Lag truly is overrated. It doesnt bother my one bit.

GT42. Its not the biggest gt42 its a 82mm wheel .60 A/R, 1.15 Turbine. I love it!!!

 

I would try and ride in a car with the turbo you are thinking about if you can.

I would stay with a ball berring turbo if you can afford it. I had a T-88 and the car made no power until 5000 rpm. My GT35R makes more power than the T-88 did until 5500 and still makes close power to it untill 6500 rpm (10whp less). After that the whole 500whp thing takes over. Anyway. . .

I really like the GT40R turbo charger. It is the only other turbo I looked at other than the GT35R when I was changing to a smaller turbo.

I guess I would go with the smallest turbo that can make what ever WHP I want around 1 bar of boost. In my case it is 400whp so the GT35R seemed right.

 

I had a T78 turbo that was modified with a Garrett GT series compressor. Originally I thought it was a GT42 compressor, turns out it was a GT55 compressor. Smaller exducer, larger inducer than the 42. Was a pretty hellacious turbo. It's hot side is way too big for a street car (supports 1600hp) but you might be able to have something custom made by Precision or another Garrett performance distributor.

Dunno yet! I just installed the new CLR motor and started her up for the first time this evening. I discovered, however, that my aluminum Fluidyne radiator had sprung a leak in between removal and reinstallation. Sigh...it's always something! So I'll be out and about trying to locate a radiator repair shop tomorrow. Should have her on the road by Saturday or Sunday. No need for engine break in as long as I keep it below 10psi and don't get stupid for the first few hundred miles. I guess it pays to have a world class engine builder. And pay I did! Results on the new 88mm wheel shortly!

BTW.......who is CLR?

 

CLR Motorsports. Carlos Lopez is the owner, SCCA GT1 champ in 2003 running a 20B n/a first gen. One of the top rotary engine builders in the country. I paid big, big money for this engine. You may have seen a few images of the rotors he does (I'll attach). Really was a big sigh of relief! I did all this myself without air tools. Removal, installation, etc...CLR naturally did all the engine work and engine assembly. We haven't heard a lot from CLR in the past mainly because they do engines for pro-level road racers around the planet.

Mostly road race stuff (as in track days, not street racing) but I'm sure I'll bring it to the drag strip on occasion!
