Apexi or Garrett

Hi, project underway. Extend Port complete. Thinking of a T35/40 Garrett Kit which is a popular street setup or go on a limb and try the Apexi AX75 Kit. Comparable pricing now. None of the threads on this forum have anything definitive about the AX75 series and its performance. I am chasing a linear power delivery of acceleration rather than just power on / off. I wanted to keep the twin turbos for this reason but engine bay room with a v-mount and lack of power from the twins has led me to want to outlay cash for the single.
Cheers

You have an interesting thought. I have not seen those series Apex turbo's... But I guess the question about them what exactly are the turbine and exhaust turbine sizes in them? That is not listed on the link you posted. That is what you need to know to compare it to the garretts. I am sure you know from reading on here that the garretts have basically what you are looking for. More specifically the gt35 has what you are looking for. The 40 may take a bit longer than what you would like to spool. Though depending on the power you want to ultimately achieve, the 35 may run out of breathe. One important question would be what exactly are you looking for in power goals? Hopefully someone a bit more knowledgeable will chime in here momentarily...

Sorry, I did a bit more research. I guess I never stumbled upon this on rx7store's website before. Sounds like the AX75F82 may be a nice little turbo... I would like to know specific trim sizes available thought..

"AX75F82 Turbine
The APEXi AX75F82 high power turbo is designed for single turbo applications requiring excellent response with high horsepower output. Horsepower range per individual turbine is from 550-650HP. The AIRICK assisted ball bearing shaft produces nearly identical response characteristics as the AX53 series with a far more potent HP output. Skyline GTR RB26DETT motors have produced 550-640HP while rotary engines produce 400-500HP. The AX75 turbo assembly can also be purchased separately for custom applications and can also be mated to various Setup Kits for individual engine applications.

AX75F92 Turbine
To better suit the needs of our customers, many of the APEXi turbos are available in different compressor and turbine size combinations. The APEXi AX75F92 turbo features the same size compressor wheel and compressor housing as the APEXi AX75F82 turbo, as well as the same quick spooling ball bearing center cartridge. However, designed for maximum power extraction of a single turbo application, the APEXi AX75F92 turbo features a larger exhaust turbine and turbine housing. The result of the larger turbine is a dramatic increase in exhaust flow and turbo efficiency. This combination has proven itself to produce maximum power in the range of 500-550HP on rotary engines and 700-750HP on single turbo RB26 applications."

Specs and Trim

Thanks for the post - legend.

'Attached' is Apexi Trim Specs. Be interested in getting some feedback. I am aiming for at least 400-500 BHP for track use primarily. I don't want to find myself wishing I had got a bigger turbo, but at the same time I don't want to sacrifice that linear power delivery we discussed above.

Looking at those charts and listening to what you say you would like to get out of the turbo I think you would be happiest with either the Garrett GT35 1.05 A/R or the Apexi AX75F82. It looks like there will be marginal differences between the two. The Garrett will leave you a little more top end power range if I am looking at things correctly.

I do have one other option for you though... I run a 500R from Aspec Tuning. You can find lots of info here on the site about it. In short, it spools about as fast as the GT35 and leave a LOT more top end to be had. On a stock ported motor I am pushing around 400whp on 15psi. There is more to be had there but I wanted something a little conservative. Many are in the 450whp at 15psi and if you can suppourt 20psi 500+ is easily had. I see 15psi at around 3500-3700rpms. I am really happy with the turbo. Just another option to throw at you....

Thanks

Hi, thanks for the recomendation. Mechanic wants me to go the T35/40 kit as its basically bolt on and comes complete with heat shield etc. However, I intend on seeing if I can get the 500R SP sent to Australia if the kit is complete. Apparently the SP version is new, but I am not quite sure about the differences. I am also presuming its oil cooled, as this is presumably better technology. Cheers

My vote would be garrett, for they are proven in all aspect of race and its very durable you can even buy a repair kit anywhere.
