Apex RX6 installed! (Pictures)

Okay so I decided to spend my Christmas finally installing the single turbo into my car. For review, the breakdown of the parts is at this thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/single-turbo-rx-7s-23/getting-myself-apex-rx6b-332175/

So I got the car back from Rick a couple months ago with a good strong motor, broke it in on the stock turbos, had it dyno tuned by Steve Kan, and even took the car to Infineon for some good track fun. I have a quick little vid of the car going through turn 1 with flames a'spittin:

So then Christmas comes around and it turns out that my family's gone, my girlfriend's gone, all my friends are gone, no work, so I figured what a perfect time to finally do this. Spent about three days of work, and I decided to post a few pics of the install. I have yet to fix the wastegate hose routing, and get a connector for the intake to the turbo, but other than that, the car's running great and should be getting tuned once I get a replacement wideband o2 sensor cable from Zeitronix (the one I had melted somehow).

A side-by-side comparison of the RX6 and stock twins:

The motor stripped of the old turbos:

The new exhaust manifold in place:

The new turbo fitted in place:

Everything buttoned back up together:

Some of the crap I get to get rid of!

I'm still getting used to the new sounds and trying to get the boost controller routed correctly, but I think the coolest thing is after I shut the car down, and I can hear the turbos still spinning for about 10-15 seconds.

I thought the RX6 kits came with a highly polished stainless manifold. . . . ??

It is stainless, but it isn't polished to a mirror-finish, and I doubt it would stay shiny anyway due to the heat and the fact that it is subject to road and engine grime build-up.

Did this kit have the watercooled wastegate feature?

Negative it does not have the watercooled wastegate. Max is right about the polishing thing...probably started out pretty shiny, but given the heat, it's near-impossible to maintain that.

TEC (http://www.turboengineering.com/) may be able to repair a damaged RX6, but in general it cannot be rebuilt in the U.S. since the rebuilders can't get parts (or at least not in small quantities). TEC trimmed the turbine wheel on my RX6 to remove some damage from an apex seal hitting it.

Also, judging by other ball bearing turbos, it seems to be common to simply (but, uh, expensively) replace the turbo when there is a failure, rather than rebuilding. You can order a new turbo (maybe just the CHRA -- no housings?) from an A'PEXi dealer like the RX-7 Store. Like all things special-ordered from Japan, you may need to wait a while before it arrives.

Yeah...thanks for reminding me.

Just a quick little update: I was able to find a silicone hose connector between the intake pipe and the turbo (3.5" to 3" reducer coupler), some brass vacuum tees, and a clamp from ATP Turbo (www.atpturbo.com). They actually are a great source for various little DIY single turbo parts, if you're ever looking for something.

I was also able to get a new O2 connector from Zeitronix (mine had heat damage), so the car should be fully equipped soon. I'm planning on driving down to the Big Willow track in a few weeks with Speedventures, so that should be tons o' fun.

Let me try this again:

Holla at my peeps TEC (http://www.turboengineering.com/) cause they might be able to fix up your punked RX6, but be knowin that the RX6 pretty much can't be rebuilt in your hood since the fixmen in the states can't get parts. TEC trimmed the hot wheel on this gangsta's RX6 to remove some hurt from an apex seal I blasted outta my exhaust port at it.

Check this out: judgin by other ball bearing turbos, it seems to be common to replace the turbo (for mad paper) when it wrecks itself, rather than just fixing up your old one. Punch the digits of an A'PEXi vendor (like the RX-7 Store) to order a new turbo (maybe just the CHRA -- no housings?) if TEC squashes your rebuild dreams. But get ready to wait for special order Japan parts, yo.

Sorry for the flame, but you asked for it by not reading my response the first time.

No one can help you if you can't express your ideas and questions clearly. You don't have to spell everything correctly or use perfect grammar, though you would be amazed at how much more helpful people are if you at least demonstrate some effort in these areas. Your recent posts are so bad that we can't even understand what you are asking. That leaves you with no chance that you will get your questions answered, because no one knows what you are asking.

Help yourself to get some answers by being more clear with your questions.

Max, I cant stop laughing at that post. I am willing to bet that you had to sit there and think about "how" to type that, and more than likely had to erease it a few times before the "final draft" was finished. OMG that was a good one...

You must have been looking over my shoulder! I even tried to answer the questions in one of the drafts.

Max- That is funny as hell! I was getting worried that I am too old for these forums!

But seriously; Is that manifold an Apexi piece or is it custom? All of the pics that I have seen for this kit show the turbo placed up and forward towards the front of the car. I love how it is tucked down, nice and cozy. I think the T-51 sits low as well. Anyway, just curious.

The manifold is an Apex piece, to the best of my knowledge.
