Is anyone using a Holset HY35W?

Hey guys/gals,
I've got a GSL-SE thats slower then almost everything, so I'm going to turbocharge it over the winter. I was orginally going to go with an OEM S5 turbo for simplicity sake, but didn't like the idea of pushing that turbocharger to its max, which is what I'd have to do to get the power I wanted. So this week, my friend told me he had a turbo for sale. More specifically, he told me he had a "really f*cking big turbo for sale", which really got me interested. I went to check it out and there was no obvious model number on it, so after researching it on the internet, I'm pretty sure that it's a Holset HY35W off a 2001-2002 Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel with an automatic transmission, and a 9cm^2 single inlet turbine housing.

I've searched numerous websites but haven't found anything useful about this turbo being used on a 13B before. I'm kind of skeptical about it because the physical size of the turbine housing looks to be quite smaller then what I've seen on most turbo RX-7s. In fact, I think the turbine housing has a T3 flange on it. I'm unsure of the A/R and trim numbers as well, as I haven't come across them yet.

Before I ask if this would be a suitable turbo for my stock ported 6-port 13B, I guess I should tell you guys that I'm not really after huge power numbers. I've heard that the 6-port irons aren't any good past the 300hp mark, so unless that fact is BS, I don't want to risk cracking an iron. Coming from a car with a tiny turbo that spools almost instantly (Mazda 323GT), I wouldn't mind some lag (in fact I want some lag), but I can't have the power coming on 2000rpm from redline either. From the looks of this turbo, it doesn't look like it would be that laggy due to the size of its turbine housing.

PS, I've been getting some conflicting information (hard to believe, I know). One site, homemadeturbo.com, says this is a HY35W:

And a Fan-based Dodge Truck Website says this is the HY35W:

The turbo my friend is selling looks identical to the first picture, and nothing like the one in the second (larger turbine housing, different downpipe and clamps).

Anyway, I would really appreciate your opinions and experience before I dive into a project with this turbo. Thanks!

i have a dodge diesel and i think it is a good turbo. just be careful with that thing, it will make a lot of boost. with the wastegate disconnected on a 5.9 liter cummins i have heard of them making in excess of 50 lbs. made to feed a medium sized diesel, so you know it can feed a rotary. my only fear about this turbo is it isn't water cooled and rotarys love to make things glow red. i know on an hx-35 (2nd gen dodge diesel turbo) you can go to just about any cummins diesel performance website and order a larger turbine housing (up to a 16 cm housing). might be able to find someone that makes one for the hy-35.

I have a 12 valve cummins aswell.... you are correct it is a t3 flange and if i remember right the 12cm3 housing coverts to like a .60 AR.... not for sure on that though

the compressor will flow quite abit..... i beleive it is around a 57mm inducer on the compressor whee.l the HW35 and HY35 are nearly identical, i belive it is a slight turbine difference....... i know the hy35 will barley not flow as well as a hx35 on top end..... but the hy spools better for the auto diesel.

alot of dsm guys use these turbos and have great success. If you could find a T3 flanged manifold and like a 16-18cm2 wastegated hotside or use an external wastegate you would have an easy easy 300-350hp with awsome boost responce...and plenty of compressor

Thanks for the info! That's pretty much what I was looking for. As turbo blue mentioned above, I can get another turbine housing that will flow more. I'll have to look into it further!
