Anyone here use a Pop off valve?

I just got a greddy pop off valve for my car. Since I have an apex'i wastegate and I do a lot of tracking, I thought that this would be a good $100 insurance policy. Assuming that my wastegate fails, will the pop off valve save my engine from going boom, if I have it set at a certain psi?

Yes, a pop off valve will vent excess boost when the preset level has been exceded. You should change out that Apexi wastegate though.

pop off valve is in a way, a secondary wastegate. just the second "condom" for added protection

First time I saw them I thought it was a great idea. But people kept saying they aren't good enough, that they react too slow

People say alot of things-----and just as often as not, they are just talking to hear their heads rattle!!!

These people are probably thinking about limiting boost SOLELY with a pop-off valve, and they are also likely SOLELY practicing the "Rhythm Method" of birth control (effective under most circumstances ---- if you are lucky).

In a well designed turbo plan you make provision for many levels of protection. Among those protections are:
1. Accurate MAP sensors
2. Accurate Boost Gauge(s)
3. Excellent ECU
4. properly matched and operationally sound wastegate
5. properly engineered and matched boost controller (e.g. Profec B).
6. exhaust system matched to powerplant design and requirements.
7. blow off valve well suited to the application
8. well matched intercooler
9. Pop-off valve set and tested to blow no higher than 1 psi or so higher than the maximum level of boost programmed by the controller and WG.

So at the risk of being redundant:
Why, for a $100 bill (more or less), would you not invest in something which will "first, do no harm" and may provide just the added protection you may need to avoid a $4-6K rebuild.

I had the Greddy one on my old T2....that was about 6 years ago. It did work! I had the boost creep prob, and it keep my engine out of trouble...most of the time. I set it to 10lbs.

This is exactly what I was thinking which is why I purchased one. Why don't apex'i rx6 owners who fear the crappy wastegate just buy a pov instead of spending money to buy another wastegate?
