anyone ever modify the rx6 turbo?
Anyone ever modify the RX6 turbo for more power? I'm thinking of ways to mess with it to bring out more power, such as extrude honing the exhaust side, or doing something to get more power. Anyone do anything to it and get good results?

I had the turbine trimmed just to get some damage trimmed off. My (very limited) understanding is that should hurt spool up and give a little gain on the top end. Or it might just make the whole turbo worse. I am not sure what effect it has had on mine.
On the turbine housing, the inlet is sort of "plus shaped", so it seems like there might be some benefit to matching it to the manifold better. On the other hand, it might have that shape for some specific reason, but I just don't know for sure.

Mine has the downpipe restriction (2 1/2" at the midpipe flange) cut off and a V band fabricated in it's place to match the rest of the 4" exhaust. Though not a mod to the turbo or manifold themselves, I do think this is a major and easily addressable deficiency of the kit.
That said, the car has not been run yet, so more to follow over the next two months...

Hey Max,
According to Mark V. (car's "biologic father"), "The exhaust housing of the turbo has been ported at the entrance to smooth the airflow transition from the manifold. the inlets were ported." Since everthing from the housing outlett to the midpipe was ceramic coated, I didn't notice the mod. Also the fact that I didn't see the original configuration preempted my notice.
Guess I'll have to take pictures if I take the turbo off anytime soon.

anyone tried to extrude hone the exhaust side to make it bigger? I wonder if that'll help and also whether or not there is the risk of the thing cracking

Extrude honing will not remove a lot of cast iron. The process will pollish the work you have already done. I offered to pay extra to keep my aluminum intake manifold on the press longer but they were not interested. (Extrude Hone Paramount, Ca )
I did clean up and match the exhaust turbine housing to the exhaust manifold and clean up the snail section as much as possible. Lousy inlet design ( Very small, poor bolt pattern placement and thin casting.)( Be careful ) I then sent it out to Extrude Hone for polishing. It didn't come back as nice as I thought. The funny thing about it was 6 months before they were begging for business from the shop I sent the work through. ( They knew they would get published in popular V8 magazines ) They even did a T4/T3 custom turbo and Extrude Honed the turbine blades ( FREE ) for dyno testing 3 months before. I don't know why I had such a difficult time with them. Could be they were flooded with bisiness after every Joe Blow read the articles written about them
