Air filter for T51R and lack of space

Hay guys,

Im having trouble finding a air filter that will allow enough air through and will fit in a small amount of space.

Car is 480WHP on its street tune with a HKS T51R turbo but every filter element Ive tried it fails to build boost.

I need something small that will flow a LOT of air.

Any sugestions?

If I cant find something that will work I may have to build a big sheet aloy air box with a big hole in the bonnet and a big pannel filter....thats all I can think of

Heres a pic of the lack of space.

how about a mesh screen? That is usually the alternative to a filter in most cases

What is the diameter of those pipes? And is that some sort of special UIM from Greddy? Curious.

What type of air filters have you been trying?

looks like stock UIM painted blue with a greddy sticker..

as to the OP

why not use a pipe to direct the outlet in another direction and then stick a filter on it..

for example.. a 45* elbow pointing upward.. and then a large mushroom filter on that..

it doesn't HAVE to be right on the mouth of the turbo..

Thanks for your post, After reading it I solved my problem of not being able to boost past 8psi. I have a tubular turbo intake and a cone filter that is in the break duct. I have to replace the filter or figure out something less restrictive.
My car is a FC so I relayy have no ideas for.

Good luck

Yeah it is the stock IM powder coated with a sticker (previous owner did it).

I will try a bend but I dont even think that will fit. That photo doesnt show how tight it is. A mushroom filter wont even fit on the turbo.

I've currently got a mesh screen on the turbo but judging by the amount of crap my last car with the turbo in the same place had on its filter....I doubt its doing much apart from keeping stones out and making bugs smaller and in more pieces before they get spun up by the turbo.

These things suck a LOT of air! I tried putting a fitler element over the mesh but the turbo just tried to suck it through the mesh (the mesh is now concave).

Has anyone had any experience with a turbo this size, 20psi and a mushroom filter by Greddy or apexi?

K&N makes very durable filters in ALL sizes. If you cannot find the good size for you in their list of products which is EXTENSIVE, they can custom make a filter to your needs.
