95' rx7 with T78, Good Buy?

I found a 95 Rx7 at a dealership. It has a T78 single turbo on it and a big front mount intercooler and alot of other stuff that i dont know much about. It had an Apex-I computer tuner thing and alot of stuff. The car is red and they told me there was only 500 of them made that year. It looks like just a touring model (no spoiler's or Gfx). But the car was featured in sport compact car magazine a while back and they had the magazine there. It says that it puts over 400hp to the wheels and runs 11.66@120. Well the dealership said that the guy did some other stuff to it and it now runs a 10.3 in the 1/4 and has like 450hp at the wheels. I know it didnt pick up more then a second in the 1/4 from 50rwhp more. But is it capable of that fast? It also has 3mm apex seals and a aftermarket LSD and some kinds strong clutch and ****. Also has a 6 point roll cage. But the odomoeter says it has 80k miles. And i know the guy raced the car alot. So anyway they want $16k for the car. Is it worth that much? And will it be reliable enough to be a daily driver? what kinda mileage should i expect? How long will it last? If its worth it i am goin to trade my 99 T/A and a couple thousand for it. But i dont want it to break down all the time and need tuneing all the time. Let me know what you think.

I would buy it! I would buy a used 03' cobra first if I were you, but I'd buy it.

If you buy a used Rx-7 stock the motor is going to blow anyway, the turbo's will break, then you will have to upgrade the clutch, and buy the upgraded turbo or turbos you wanted from the start, etc etc.

Here you should be getting a T-78, Fuel pump, Inj, Front mount, clutch, guages, boost controller etc all for 16k.

If you do blow the motor you take it to Gotham racing in Tx...Yes, even if you don't live there... you drive there anyway. Tell Mr.Kan and company to give you a rebuild and fix the screw ups. In the end it would be a butt load cheaper than trying to do it from scratch from the start.

Daily driver? Depends. From my experience I would say no.

Good deal? Depends. Get a compression check, and have it looked over by a competent rotary mech.

How long will it last? Depends.

If you are looking for a reliable daily driver, stay clear of this car.

Don't buy a highly modified car like that unless you really know what you are doing. There are countless things that could have been to the car in the course of modding it that only the owner/mechanic would know about.

Also, the car will not pass smog, in any area that requires it.

the motor prolly has a chipped apex seal or something. Get the compression test done before even considering buying it.

I would personally buy the car. Like someone else pointed out there is a hell of a lot more than 16k into that car with mods and work. Even if the engine was blown I still think its not a bad deal. For you Blazin TA I highly recommend you not buy the car. You sound like you are looking for a reliable daily driver. This car is no where near that. A stock FD isn't even that. This car needs to be a weekend driver and will 100% sooner or later need a new engine.

That car should be 22-24k. Did they say how many miles are on this engine?

thanks for all the input guys. I was kinda leaning towards not buying it. I like rx7's alot and i know this will be a fast car but will also be alot of work. I can handle working on stuff. But i dont know **** about rotarys yet. So i guess i will wait til i make more money and buy one later and build from there. But if anyone is interested. The car is in Flagstaff Arizona at Planet Nissan, Subaru. The body is very straight. And everything looks clean and taken care of. One of my friends test drove it and said it was insanely fast.
And he thought my low 13 second LS1 was really fast. So if anyone wants more info i could probably get it for them. Later

The people at the dealership understand what they have and know there is alot more that $16k into the car. But in thre eyes all the modifications are worthless to the average joe who wants to buy the car. So i might try and find a local mechanic that knows Rotary's well and have him check it out and see what he thinks. Thanks guys

This would be very hard to do, but, it is possible with perfect traction, a great driver, and alot of luck...

you sound like you are headed for the right decison for you. congrats.

the fd is probably the best engineered mass produced sportscar to date... but it is flawed in some areas that can be easily fixed if properly modded.

this specific car would be a nightmare for someone who hasn't invested a few years research on the breed. it could also be a good buy for someone who really understands it.

if you like the fd do a bit of prep work, buy a moderately modded car to start and then build it the way you want. and the rx7 forum will be around to help.

good luck,

howard coleman

I personally remeber this car on autotrader when I was trying to sell my 95. Unless it has been in a wreck or the car is just trashed I think this is a great deal. The guy was asking 23000 for it. Even if it has a bad motor you have a 95 with 80k on it and you can get a new motor and have it installed for 3500. I think it is a great deal and if I didnt have so many cars right now I would try to buy it out from under you. J/K
