its funny that you mentions atkins because he installs 3mm on all of his turbo rebuilds. So you may just want to get the 3mm its really not even that much more why not.

not that much more for the seals, then add the machining for the rotors and you're upping the cost a decent chunk for anyone trying to save some cash.

How can they be 50% stronger being only 33.3% larger?

I think there's many factors at play here aside from the width of the seal. One of the major ones being the rotor slot itself.

I mean, how many people have clearanced rotor slots to the level of consistency (from top of groove to bottom) that you'd get with a freshly milled rotor?-------->How many of the 2mm failures resulted in rolling the seal?

With a conservative (safe) tune on most street driven cars, 2mm will get the job done. The engine is fragile either way.

Didn't they have 6mm seals in the old 10A's? I bet they could have detonated from here to china, right?

I think its mostly a matter of peace of mind. If a person is of the school of thought that they need to have 3mm in their 450HP 7, then they won't feel safe unless they do. At the same time a person who thinks the 2mm stuff is strong enough would be happy with a 2mm build. Its more mental then anything else I think........the advocation of one or the other that is. I mean, very few Japanese tuners use 3mm. Not that it has anything to do with anything.

OEM's are right it the middle for hardness... Everything dealing with any motor in any car is preference. The only saying coming to mind is "whatever floats your boat", though I definitely don't live by that saying HAHA.
