Just wondering if anyone has tried any paint that matches up with the matte-ish black shade on the 93 steering column trim pieces (top and bottom)

There is a type of paint or maybe it is interior dye.

It's called "Trim Black"

I think it is made SEM

it is hands down the best interior in a can type product.

The best thing besides dying the interior

You can pick it up at baxters for around $15.00

just apply in very thin coats, so it doesn't fill the texture profile.

I have used it on FD's before, it looked ALMOST perfect.

 

the problem I have isn't color/texture match its durability.

 

I have never had much luck with the $6 can paint you find locally resisting scratches. Maybe try checking with Eastwood's if they have a tech department for their suggestions. So while you guys who know paint/dye very well are answering this one, could you also suggest a product for the outside door latch trim?

 

Trim black is made for indoor/ outdoor use.

Ive used it many times.

I agree with this. I use this bumper paint on the 99 lip though.

It's not the steering column, but I've had good luck with Plasti-Dip. Got it at Lowe's. Been over a year and still looks new.

I just finished doing most of my interior with this stuff and it looks great, I have been DD'n my car and it is holding up well, it has only been a month but no scratches ect. Like Theorie said it is a very close match to the 93 trim. Only piece I have left is the drivers door plastic (pocket needs to be rebuilt)

not sure if it matches oem exactly since idk what it looks like from factory, but the sem trim black that prometheus is preaching about is this ****.... i used to too and its amazing.

as long as youre not a moron it doesnt over spray.... ive had a drop drip on my trim (bc of my finger being too close to the nozzle) and it dried PERFECT.

also this stuff smells effing delicous, like strawberries or somethign...

downside idk where u can get it besides the internet....

 

Nothing will match exactly to the OEM coatings.

I'm snooty about my FD, and I'd use this stuff.

Bumper paint is too thick, it fills the texture profile of the faux leather

 

Try asking a local car stereo shop. They usually know of people who paint interior parts. Car Toys referred me to someone and 2 years later you still can't tell it was painted. Looks perfect. I'll see if I can dig up his name if you like.

 

Here's a picture of the drivers door piece sprayed with Duplicolor's Bumper Coating. It matches the window switch color/texture nearly perfect. It does have a slight texture to it, yet it gives it some durability to scratches.

Wow, that looks great, but your plastics were fucked.

Did you remove all the textured coating, or was it like that from wear?

 

probably 93 plastics (no texture)

 

They are '93 pieces without the texture, and the plastics were very messed up, I did remove the rest of the coating with some "goof-off"

DO NOT USE SANDPAPER
Doing so will result in just scratching the plastic, and not removing the rubber/paint coating



End result, made the piece come out all smooth and shiny ready for paint

 

You can sand the 93 finish off. I did in the above photos. 150 grit for the old finish, then 220 and then a fine sanding pad. No scratches...at least not with the Plasti-dip paint finish. BTW once dried it's VERY scratch resistant. You have to be trying.
I'd be a little concerned about adhesion w/o any sanding. Looks like even Duplicolor recommends it. http://www.duplicolor.com/solutions/tips.html

 

also, use a prep wipe, most of these plastics will have some residue on them! even when i sanded very very good with 500 and 700 grit it STILL bubbled the paint. I used plasti dip and it turned out good. only problem I have is that its a little dusty and its not that easy to clean. also where my knee hits the ac control panel it rubbed off the coating so I have to repaint it.
