I've been trying to fix my turn signal all day now and I can't figure out what is wrong with it.
My driver's side turn signals, front and rear will not work; the side marker does work though.
I read it isn't a grounding problem if the side marker works.
The one that was in my car hasn't worked since I owned it and I bought another.
I bought a new one because the old one had let in water and rusted out the light socket; thought maybe that was why.
I've tried three or four different combinations and still can't get it to work.
I plugged it in normally and it didn't work, so then I cut the connector off the turn signal and used the old one; that also didn't work. I checked it a few times, changed the bulbs in the back and front no luck.
Tmrw I'm going to cut the connector inside the car and try to splice the new one on. Though the guy that cut it only left me like 1in of wire so it will be sort of hard.
Before I do this I just thought I'd check the forum and see if anyone could shed some light on this.
I have no idea why the rear one isn't working either; I haven't even begun to mess with it.

did you check your fuses? i didnt read there that u looked at em

 

I didn't check it because I figure since one fuse controls the turn signals that if it was the fuse both sides wouldn't work. My passenger side works as welll.

 

Either one or both ds bulbs are bad or there is a bad connection to the front or rear. Probably corrosion at one of the connectors.

Suggest you go to the FAQ section, download the FSM wiring diagrams, and use it for reference to identify each of the connection points.

 

When you turn left do you hear the flasher inside the CPU clicking?

When you turn left, does the left indicator on the dash light up?

Indicator does not light up but the flasher clicks........means no output from the board inside the CPU that controls the turn signals is the problem.

I assume when you turn right you hear the flasher clicking inside the CPU and the right hand front and rear signals are flashing on/off.

You can buy turn signal boards for the CPU from the Mazda dealer or Mazdatrix (a dealer also).

FYI...According to the wiring diagrams, the output to the indicator on the dash is after the signal leaves the CPU, so if you don't have that indicator, the problem lies inside the CPU, NOT after the CPU.

OH, and it's two fuses that control the turn signals. The HAZARD and the Turn Signal fuses. Won't work without both fuses. Then again, your right side works so both fuse are good.

 

Your post confused me.
When I turn on the driver's side turn signal it clicks really fast and the indicator light doesn't come on.
I haven't turned with it on so I don't know about the rest.
So, it is the cpu since I don't have an indicator light ?
I thought that if it was the cpu then it wouldn't work for the passenger side also.

 

I really suggest you look at the FSM wiring diagram before you ask any more questions......................................... .

 

I have the haynes manual and all it's wiring diagrams but I have no idea about any of this. I was just going by what he was saying.

Okay, I d/l'd the FSM and it is a bit easier to read/decipher.
I'll check the cpu and then update tmrw.

 

A friend had this happen with his 300zx, got a who new switch at pullapart for like 3 dollars, and it fixed it! You never know though.

 

Well if the test for the switch comes back bad then I'll try to find a new switch, but if it is fine and it ends up being a bad ground then I'll probably be back here to ask how to find and/or fix.

 

ill bet money its the CPU, its down by where your left foot is in the side kick pannel. super easy to get at, just take it apart and have a look a the boards, see if there are any brown spots or discoloration.

 

If you signal left, and hear the relay/flasher in the CPU clicking, then the turn signal switch is good. You say you signal right and it works good to the right, so the bottom line is the signal switch is good. Period.

Look at the wiring diagram. You'll notice that the signal going to the dash indicator light, is sent to the indicator light from a place after the CPU. So that tells you that the problem lies inside the CPU.

Read the BODY ELECTRICAL section of the FSM and you find that the circuit boards inside the CPU can be swapped out for a good one.

I get a little puzzled when you say the clicking is rapid when signaling left. Usually means one of the light bulbs is kaput..........but you get no indicator light on the dash...and that makes me a little uneasy. Don't know what to think about that.

When I said "when you turn left....." in my first post I meant "when you signal left....".

In the attached jpg I underlined the wires to the indicator dash lights in red to show you what I meant by the signal not getting out of the CPU even though the clicking is happening inside the CPU.

You do get a right turn indicator when you signal right? Right? Should.

I assumed this diagram belonged to your type series five car. There are others for other versions of series five cars.

 

Yes, I get a right indicator.
Also, I checked the bulbs multiple times now and have swapped them with the right side's since I know for sure they are good .
I read the FSM manual I few times but I am also uncertain since I am getting no indicator light.
Though, I'm going to order a new driver's side power window regulator real quick, and then I'll check the cpu.

 

Fast click usually indicates a short or bad bulb on that circuit - don't know specifically on the FC, but on other cars I've had with a signalstat that's usually the case. You said you already swapped bulbs - might have to trace wiring - watch in particular for areas where wires cross or penetrate panels. Frustrating if it comes down to that, but not much else to do. Something similar happened on a 626 Touring I used to have, problem was a replacement screw in the top of the front left fender had penetrated the wiring harness that ran under it.

Thanks for your help everyone I'm going to re-do all the wiring and grounds in the car over the next month.
This car has an array of electrical problems and I figure that it can't hurt to go ahead and do this now.
