Bad ground question involving multiple symptoms.
Bad ground question involving multiple symptoms.
I've posted a few different threads concerning my power window switch and turn signals on the driver's side. My idiots lights also all light up and flash on and off everynow and then. I'm starting to think that maybe I have a bad ground somewhere that is causing all of these problems.
I've checked everything for the turn signals; fuse, bulbs, switch, and the cpu it is all good.
The window switch is good, the motor you can hear try to work everynow and then; sounds like it has a bad connection and isn't getting juice or something. I might order a new regulator but I figure that I'd ask about a grounding problem first.
The idiot lights I cannot figure out and I read that is could be caused by a ground problem. I was told it was because the idiot lights were getting too little voltage and it was causing them to light up.
I'm really running out of paitence I am planning on just parking the car until I have money/time to fix all the problems but I can mess with the wiring as a project until I have the money for the engine, etc.
Any help or advice on finding bad grounds would be greatly appreciated because I do not have a lot of knowledge of wiring; though I learned how to read a wiring diagram, sort of, last night/this morning.

While you may have a problem deciphering the wiring diagrams the easiest by far with respect to understanding them relates to the grounds for they are pretty much all black wires and the diagram will indicate these grounds by virtue of looking at the bottom of the wiring diagram and there will be a wire coded with a "B" for black and it ties into a horizontal line at the bottom of said diagram. This horizontal line will usually have a pic of a little car on the left which represents a "body" ground and there is usually a number associated with the ground. As an example, the ground number for most of the rear tail lights is # 25. As far as the front lights are concerned there are at least 6 grounds in the engine compartment ( 2 for headlights, 2 for headlight motors, 1 for driving lights and 1 for side markers as the driving and marker lights share the same ground). I would also suggest reading up on Aaron Cake's grounding write up. And regrounding the CPU would also be a good idea. Sand paper, dielectric grease and perhaps shiny new bolts especially for the grounds under the hood where dirt is a long term resident is all you need, and a multimeter also helps in determining that there is zero voltage passing through the ground wire. Of course you will disconnect the negative terminal on the battery before going to town on the grounds.
Lol; thanks. I'll read up on his write-up.
I have a feeling that a lot got messed up when my brother owned the car and let his friend wire his speakers and fuelpump cut off switch.
Well that combined with the fact the car is 20yrs old.

Warning lights/Idiot lights all lighting up indicated a alternator problem. Slipping belt?????
Anytime the alternator isn't putting out and the key is to ON or better, ALL the warning lights come on.
Or even a short on the small white/black wire on the alternator connector will do the same thing (not a likely thing).

Actually had a loose belt a while back but it snapped and I replaced it.
I had a feeling that the problem might have something to do with the alternator because usually the lights flicker on and off depending on how fast the engine is running.
Higher rpms usually the lights would be REALLY bright.
