WTF? My turbo is glowing!!!(pictars)

Ok so i adjusted my timing today and......................
My freaking turbo is glowing red after a short drive!!!i was like
OUCH!!! did I blow anything up? i lined up the yellow mark w/ the L1 and the red w/T1 then adjust the timing to 10BTDC
I felt the turbo spooling quicker after adjusting the timing but i think the car is slower=(
HOw the F***K do i adjust my timing!!! i have locked my dizzy and no vacuum advance......DAMMIT!
also i adjusted my TPS and my cuts fuel? or something B4 hitting boost.......(w/ about 20-25% throttle) and the boost/vac line goes crazy up and down..ARGHHH!!! I hate Dizzy's

I have no answer to your question .... but i just wanted to say holy f**k that has got to be the hottest turbo that I have ever seen. I don't even think that you can re use that turbo again, things are probably bent out of shape. I feel for you bro. good luck trying to fix that.

were you running it extra hard? is the turbo oil or oil/coolant cooled? how are the oil and or coolant lines running to it? did you check for play on the turbine?

i cant see how timing would make your turbo do that... but uhh, put it back how it was before and see what happens.

g'luck

yeah thats what i'm gonna do! and no i was not driving hard!
The oil return and feed lines are good / no mayor shaft play
I hope the turbo is not gone=(....I did let it cool down after i got home
It never glowed B4 This is the 1st time

By adjusting your timing, you allowed unburned fuel and air to circulate into the turbine, where they where then ignited by the heat of the turbine itself. This is a self sustaining cycle as the turbine gets hotter it becomes easier to ignite the unburned fuel.

reset your timing to ensue that more of the fuel is being burned where it belongs, in the combustion chamber, and that will stop the glowing manifold or glowing turbo syndrome.

turbo will probably be ok as long as you let it cool down slowly before shutting it off. if you shut it down while its still hot, you run the risk of warping, or cracking the exhaust snail.

Kenn

BTW what did you ex temp read? probably around 1900 F or so right? scary teritory that is

Looks like too much timing retard, leaving a lot of unburned fuel to enter the turbine. My turbo glows too, with normal TII timing and light/moderate driving, although not nearly that bright!

Wow. Hope the turbo is okay. Just like kenn said, usually if the timing is too retarded, you will get unburned fuel entering the exhaust and burning in the turbine/exhaust manifold.

i've seen this happen to people at the track when messing with timing and boosting higher, turbo's get damn hot, so at night its not uncommon to see them glow after some hard runs. but yeah.... put the timing back and you should be a-ok. the only possible damage i can think of is in the coolant lines to the turbo.

you're running rich. and fuel isbeing burnt in the turbo, a.k.a. your timing is not right!

pull out your turbo and check inside you my have sucked up some carbone or other engine debre thats causing to much friction. it happened to my mx6 a feww years back.

i would also check to make sure the bearings in the turbo are ok. if it's getting hot lik that eith it's getting heated up by fuel or it's getting heated up my friction. Just check timing, fuel, oil, coolant(if it's a water cooled). You'll find it. Only other thing i sugest is a lighter wieght oil.

You basically created a poor man's gas turbine jet engine. Now if you could just get it to be sustaining you could shut the rotary off and go on Jet Power, a new kinda Hybrid!!

If you set the timing to stock with a locked dizzy, you will not advance mechanically as rpm increases and be overly retarded. Get a timing light with an advance dial or draw some new timing marks on your main pulley and get the timing set at about 15 degrees before TDC locked.

I've seen plenty of turbos look like that, or close to it at least. As long as you let them cool down before shutting her off it's normaly not a problem.

running lean would cause that as a lean mixture burns hotter than a rich mixture. You mentioned something about your fuel cutting out, check that out.

You guys should fly airplanes. The first time you are in a turboed twin engine at night and all the vents around the engine have glowing red light coming out of them form the turbo it really freeks you out but its normal.

Well i kinda messed up on my 1st post.......what i meant was. the car sputters or fuel cuts out right before hitting boost! @ about 20 / 25% throttle
I think i there's something wrong w/my TPS adjustment .........B/C it started doing that after i adjust it!.......I steped on the gas pedal and let go to see the (test lights) and sometimes no light turned on? could it be the throttle cable?
One of the lights is supposed to stay on w/ the T/B closed right?
i did try another TPS but same thing happened
And about the Glowing problem.....Its fixed just put the dizzy back to how it was ! and COOL TURBO

Go with what Watson says 15 deg of timing untill you get an EGT and a wide band O2 and begin tuning. 15 deg will be enough to keep the engine running kind of happy and enough to keep the turbo from melting off of the manifold.

Red is normal if you're running hard - like you would in a plane all the time. You need to start worrying when the metal glows white.
