Brake pedal rubber stopper direct replacement part number found.

Hi all,

Came back after an afternoon in town to find my brake lights on. A brief look on the floor mat gave me the answer to the puzzle, the rubber stopper had disintegrated into several pieces. Saw several solutions on old posts here, but thought I'd try Mazda for a replacement part as I'm a bit of a stickler for minor details like that sometimes... After a detailed explanation of the part in question including the chassis code, no joy. There does not appear to be a part number for the stopper. Off to the local wrecker to have a scavenge. All mazdas, no joy; honda, no joy; toyota, no joy. The part is available in a p10 nissan primera... Also able to be purchased new, part number from nissan: 46584S0100, google search brings up plenty of suppliers. Just in case anyone is ever looking for a replacement

Awesome find. Over the years I've used everything from bolts to rubber chair leg pads. Its a really stupid design as it can leave a person stranded if they don't know what to look for. I can't tell you how many times one went on me while road testing a car and getting stuck at an intersection.

Where does this part go? I have never heard of this issue but would like to fix it before it goes out.

There's a switch that is activated when the brake lever is depressed. (Normally open.)
There should be a rubber stopper between the switch and the brake lever.

Cool

My 10 mm bolt and nut have been in place working for the past 10 years, with no ill effects on wear to the switch, as some will have you believe.

I just had this happen too. Was driving around town and felt something on my shoe. Being an American in Australia and fearing the giant spiders we get here, I pulled over and prepared to scream and dance on the highway as usual.

To my relief, I found a sprinkling of amber colored plastic pieces crumbled on top of my shoe. Brake light switch stopper rubber disintegrated and the brake lights now on full time. Being an automatic car though, I wasn't stranded and just drove home carefully with the brake lights stuck on.

Found a 10mm flange head bolt and a nut and put that in the hole where the rubber used to be. What an absolutely stupid design!!!!! Why not just press a bulge or a 'pimple' on the steel instead of a stupid hole and a rubber that falls apart. Who the hell came up with that idea.

Further update: looked in my wife's 1995 Ford Probe as the cars actually share a close genetic Mazda link.

95 Ford Probe uses a much better quality black butyl-rubber stopper thingy that fits the FD.

As with most parts I've cross referenced between these cars over the years, it continues to be the case that the 1995 Ford Probe has better quality EVERYTHING that fits the FD RX7. All the small clips and knick-knacks on the Probe seem to be really good. Case in point, the flimsy metal trim ring around the ignition barrel on the FD is a nicer, more snug fitting textured black plastic ring in the Probe, etc.

Interesting find on the Ford Probe parts. Some of those parts, if they cross over, may be cheaper/more easily available due to the large numbers of Probes sold and the Ford connection.

The stopper should be some sort of soft material, if you have a bolt in there you could get metal to metal contact (the metal of the switch to the bolt) which could give squeaking or give more wear on the plastic pin on the switch.

Stick on rubber chair feet aren't sexy but I've used them with great success for many years. But, it would be worth putting the proper part on just so it's cleaner and less hack-y.

What other parts are you aware of that cross over?

Ford doesn't sell it separate, picture actually looks a lot like the Fd one.

Mazda number is B001-43-029 and Ford is E7GZ-7583-A, its the same part, Mazda list price is $2.76 and Ford is $13.30.

Thanks Billy, I found the part on Amazon: http://a.co/2zsVfqw, relatively pricey for a piece of rubber but, OK. I just ordered two, don't know if it's cheaper if I walked into Nissan parts dept, but, nothing beats ordering from the comfort of my home

That B001-43-029 DOES NOT FIT the plunger hole correctly. The stem on it is TOO SMALL!

Same for clutch pedal. If the grommet stopper falls apart, you can’t start the car because depressing the clutch pedal doesn’t depress the switch plunger allowing the starting circuit to be energized.
