rockauto.com?

does anyone buy from them? i just saw an ad in discover for them. obviously, the price comparison did make them out to be a really good deal, is this accurate? they advertised a raybestos mc for about half of what checker/kragen sells them for.

any experience dealing with them would be helpful, as i'm considering giving them a try when i have to purchase some parts for my mitsubishi (soon).

I bought some FC brake shims from them. I think the rears(?) were for the HD brakes. Otherwise no issues. I get some monthly junk email from them, what whatever.

we bought a caliper from them before

only bad thing is they have no retail stores by us (or anywhere maybe) for core returns. iirc that's what makes them cheaper

I brought carpet for my FC from them. pretty good price and shipping was quick.

well, that's good to know.

aznpoopy, i believe they have a single warehouse (rather than all those costly stores to maintain), and that's why i was thinking that there might be something to their lower-price claims. and it sounds like they have good enough service to make it a package deal. i believe i give them a shot. thanks for the heads-up on the core return issue, that never occurred to me. i'll probably still go B&M for core-charge items.

mods: sorry for posting in Gen Auto section, i never noticed this forum before.

Thanks for the kind words about my family's business, RockAuto. RockAuto does take back cores. However, shipping charges on cores aren't refundable. Before sending back a core, you'll need to decide if the core deposit is worth the shipping cost. RockAuto's price for the part is usually still competitive even with the cost of shipping back the core or not claiming the core deposit.

Core deposits that are not claimed go to the remanufacturer (A1 Cardone, ACDelco, etc.) For more info on returning cores go to: http://www.rockauto.com/lang/en/policy.html

7romanstatesmen is right that prices are low because RockAuto's parts are shipped right from the warehouse. Some parts are also drop shipped directly from manufacturers.

Our "Wholesaler Closeout" parts are so inexpensive (sometimes 1/2 off the prices of our regular inventory) because RockAuto paid less for them and we pass on the savings to customers. For example, maybe there are not many 20 year old Mazdas still on the road in North Dakota so an auto parts chain decides to sell off most of its older Mazda inventory sitting in its Bismark warehouse. RockAuto buys up that inventory because we sell online and there are still lots of older Mazdas on the road when you add them up all over the world.

I have installed "Wholesaler Closeout" brake lines, boots, etc. on my family's '87 Mazda without a hitch. One Raybestos box had an outdated logo on it, but otherwise I noticed no difference. Limited quantities is the only downside to the "Wholesaler Closeouts". Sitting on a warehouse shelf is light duty for an auto part.

Thanks again! Tom Taylor, tom@rockauto.com
