Wanted: SA fuel tank
IIRC, in case you can't find a SA, I am fairly certain you can run an S2, 81-83. You will need the S2 tank straps and it will hang a little lower due to the increased volume, but it's another option if you can't find a SA tank.
I would think its possible but also would think the straps would be too short. You might need
to use longer bolts at the back when you attach em. Will the lower position mess with the rubber
filler tube connecting to the gas fill opening? Not sure on that.

It will hang lower because the S2 spare tire compartment is more shallow. (They used the donut spare rather than the full size spare like the SA used). It may hang too low to work. I dont know how handy you are, but if you could find a donor car and remove the spare tire compartment from it and transplant it into the SA then it woul work fine. Its just a few spot welds to drill and reweld.
This is something I have considered so I could have the bigger tank = longer range.

That was another concern I had but I suppose I could use the fb filler?

Whoops, I didn't think about the filler neck. I am sure a solution could be found, but the tank will hang low, as I initially stated.
Do you have a tank that could be refurbished?

could also get some of the parts easier for the FB tanks I think and the SE tanks
have baffles and stuff don't they? Is the sender resistance the same? Minor issues
but might be worth it.
I havent checked into it to see if the sender resistance was the same, havent researched that far yet, but I do have a FB tank waiting in the spare part shed if I ever get around to it. And the spare wont be missing, it will just be the smaller donut spare compartment, which wouldnt bother me as I dont carry a spare anyway, got a pump with sealant for that, removed the spare to save weight.
I dont think it would actually be that much work, just a few spot welds to drill out and then set the donor car spare tire bin in with a few welds, or screws and some seam sealant. It would never be noticed as a modification, and the two extra gallons would extend my range quite a bit. Plus the FB tanks are easier to find when time comes for a new one.
Its on the back burner of my ever increasing to do list.
