Today I went out for a drive and spotted an old First Gen RX7 setting in someone's backyard, flat tires and all. I am going to check it out tomorrow.

Let us know what's up with the first gen!

I was going to say something about putting a turbo in my car without having it being in good working order. Word mincer today... You get what I'm trying to say. I'm just a compression test spazz when I hear about things going wrong. It's cheap, easy and doesn't take much time.
1. They're about to be discontinued and I want to get one before that because:
A. They're about the most inexpensive and
B. I hear they're very easy to use and very adjustable
2. I was about to add an exhaust and that would make 3 bigger bolt ons (see the 3 mod rule). People don't seem to realize they should upgrade the computer first THEN mods. You can only run so many mods before you need to upgrade the computer and it just makes more sense to do the computer first, or at least run only a COUPLE mods before the computer. Besides with a computer you can get more power out of it by tuning alone.
If YOU'RE feeling froggy, why don't you come down this weekend with your tester and we'll do a comp test on the car for ***** and giggles?
I understand what you're saying about the rebuild kit, but you do with what you have, and I don't even have $500 to be blowing on a new engine right now but between the two, I'd probably go with that one. Ideally though, I'd probably tear the engine down first and see what I could reuse. Like you, I'd much rather have the full kit, but it's not monetarily possible right now.
Yeah, I understand all of those points. My compression tester was dropped and I don't think it's giving good readings. I believe this because I've tested another RX-7 that was running a HELL of a lot better than mine, but it's compression was reading the same as mine. I see where you are coming from with the 3 mod rule.
Anyone else notice the post times have changed? Instead of times they are putting like "3 hours ago" and stuff. I like that a lot better. Hear that mods!?!? RRDI has spoken. We have one of the longest running threads and we approve of this change. (If everyone else agrees...)

Those are for S5 4 pistons but you should have some on the front like it on yours .
Nic, last year they did say they would be glad to open a class for japanese sports cars or rotary cars if we were going to have some entries. I would like to do that this year and will email the show officials to get that started. I would like to see at least one of every rotary model entered, the pre RX7 cars, the 3 gens of the RX7 and that other rotary powered car, what's it called? :0)
Where did you get the housings and rotors you had at the last Drive-In? Were they from your old engine or a gift from God? I'd like to use them to create a rotary engine display to show the rotary ignorant what it is and how it works. Of course we could do a static model if we could get someone like Gary to run a rotary demonstration on his laptop for the curious. Eric and Josh might appreciate seeing how a rotary engine should work.
Eric, thanks for the offer and I could come get it after we get back from DGRR. Do I need any special tools to strip it down to the housings? I got ziploc bags so could keep and label all the parts.
Now just need to figure out how to build the display and if we want it static or with moving parts. What would be most interesting to car guys and the general public? We could compare the total number of moving parts in the typical piston engine and a rotary, or compare power output to volume and engine weight, maybe back the figures up with dyno charts, Put info in a brochure and stress the toughness of the rotary due to few moving parts - its racing history vs its history in the hands of some owners. Also its other uses in aircraft and marine craft, More Ideas ?

I'm in for the Air Show thing again this year if it's on a Sunday like last year. As far as a pre-meet drive.... I'm saving my car for Deals Gap the next week!!! Of course I could take the Vert... hrmmm. Dunno... got alot to do that weekend.

I've not heard a lot of good things from guys who have used Hawks for normal street driving, but they are great for racing. I like PBR ceramics or EBC Red ceramic pads. They sound like you're breaking tiles, dishes and pots when you stop but they last, are low dust, except for all the broken pots and dishes and tiles you leave on the road, and stop the car.
As Greg said the shims are very important in keeping the pads tight and "jiggle" free. Just remember with Sports Cars cheaper is never better except when you're buying racing equipment to drive on the street. If you need shims, I might have some when I finally get around to pulling off my single piston calipers and installing the 4 piston variety. Just can't find the time to paint the new ones.

I wonder if I should run another can of Seafoam through the engine...any ideas from the peanut gallery?
Oh yeah, it ran a little better tonight but still bad. And I keep forgetting to mention, I see more smoke coming from the turbo side of the engine bay, haha.

^+1, they already sell them in the U.S. I was looking online last night and found a few used ones already. Be prepared to get rid of your appendages though...most of them were still ~$70K, USED. I've seen it before that you can get a base model (not supercharged I assume) for around $35K, and the best model for $70K (I didn't know a freakin supercharger costs $35K
), so I assume all of them are the better model. It makes me want to build my own to be quite honest with you. And of course I thought about using a rotary instead of the B20 but I think the Honda engines might be designed better for it already, meaning how it's mounted there would be less work involved in making it applicable. It would always be possible to use the rotary if enough work were involved, I'm sure there's some way to do it, but seeing the affects of the supercharged B20, you'd probably kill yourself with a supercharged rotary, haha. (I wouldn't go turbo for this myself, I think supercharged is a much better route in this case)
Yeah after swapping out the plugs it starts right up, but once it dies out or you shut it off, it won't start again, like it's flooded all over again that quickly.
I just noticed something else about this forum...I had noticed some bad grammar and when I went to edit it a minute ago, it was correct. Interesting. Also, sometimes when I capitalize all the letters in a word or sentence, sometimes they won't be capitalized when it's posted, but if you go back and change it they do sometimes. This thing is freaky!

eric, i was thinking we could pull your motor, get a bunch of industrial rubber bands, hook one end to the tranny, the other to a crank on the front of your car. then wind it up every time you need to drive. huh? huh?
no....
okay...
just a thought...
PS. erase some damn PMs I can't even message you anymore.
