Roll Cages in Atlanta?
Roll Cages in Atlanta?
Hey everybody im trying to find someone/somewhere to do at minimum a roll bar in an 85 GS for a reasonable price- or does anyone know of anywhere online i can order one? i just cant justify paying $400+ shipping on an autopower roll bar. ideally im looking for a 4-6pt with diagonal and harness bar...i mean i know its a pita to measure everything out, and bend the tubing, and weld it all in and together, but seriously. im also about to move to east tennesee so if theres anyone up there...really anyone within a reasonable drive from atlanta or chattanooga. HELP!
CarterRace- it doesnt need to be legal. grassroots events dont care, which is what the car is used for/along with being a beater d/d. but yea. im saying autopower is waaaaay overpriced for my taste. for example were talking about maybe $35 worth of steel and ill throw in a generous 250 for labor of bending and welding- (ive already measured out the angles.) - were still only at 285. autopower wants $403.00 Plus shipping. then it has to be installed. i have no doubt that their quality is superb, and their legality meets or exceeds industry standards, but im just looking basically for someone who can weld a cage together.
aws140- thank you!! pm'd him!

My pal races in NASA events and just got a cage installed in his car and it cost him $900 at Balanced Performance in Gwinnett. That's just to have it INSTALLED. That's after they quoted him at 200, and it ended up being $900. Just buy the cage, there are ton of shops who'll put it in. Having one made will cost you way more.
Proper tubing costs a lot more than $35. It has to be the proper grade and gauge.
Then add in the labor of bending it properly, and welding everything properly. A good cage will run around $100 a pt usually. If you buy a prefab, it's a little cheaper usually.
The best pre-fabbed cage for the money for a 1st gen is Kirk Racing, IMO. I had one for years in my GSL-SE, and the 6pt ran me $500 from AutoMod. It was well built and was contoured to the car's lines. I never have liked the Autopower bars.
If you aren't going to do it right, don't bother spending your money. Crush bending muffler pipe into a rollbar is not going to help, it will just crush when you flip.

for the record- i would NEVER crush bend muffler pipe and try to pass it off as a cage. when i bought the car, the dimwit *cough* bold understatement had....ahem are you ready for this? had a truck rollbar, cut in half, crushed on one end so they could meet and form a "hoop", then bolted it straight through the floor with no joke six different kind of bolts...then the car sat. as you can imagine- it rusted straight through the floor pan. obviously that was one of the very first things to go.
$900 for installation alone? wow. i dont even know what to say.
i got a quote from billy (bwaits) at respeed and very well might go with them, the only downside being my car would have to stay with them in athens for a week, but im waiting on a quote from another place through lethal injection in marietta, and waiting to see what i hear from them, and make a decision from there.
i checked out kirk racing, and they seem very good and have obviously been good to deal with- as the best advertisement is word of mouth. this is yet another option- to order just the basic roll bar (4 pt) then have the harness bar, and diagonal fabbed up by a shop.
just incase anyone was wondering, side by side before shipping.
Autopower Street Bar: $318.50
Automod: $225 (in atl down 285 @ p'tree ind blvd)
Kirk Racing: $245+ (in Al 2+ hr drive but possibly cheaper than shipping)

I'm going to be driving through Atlanta about the end of Sept. I could drop one off for you. I can bend up a cage/bar for you and do most of the fitting and you could find somebody to weld it in for you up there. Are you looking for an SCCA type legal set up?
Kirk Racing is the ****. Its a bit of a drive, but worth it.
Guy i know had them do a full cage in his first gen. It is badass. Very nice work. Well priced. You cant even see it from the side of the car becuase its tucked up there so nicely, and they specialize in second gen. rx7s from what i understand, but obviously just do good work in general. i will search for pics of adams setup.
If my friend wasn't making mine, i would go to KR.
Balanced Performance is ******* Rip-Off. Im sorry that your friend found out the hard way.
