North Carolina Rotary Down East Drive-In, May 7-8

The Down East Drive-In for rotary owners will be the weekend of May 7-8 either in New Bern or Morehead City. The best thing is that the Blue Angels will be a MCAS Cherry Point flying on Saturday & Sunday. We can drive down on Saturday and then on Sunday caravan into Cherry Point and watch the Blue Angels with their rotary powered machines. Who is interested in joining the caravan down east?

Rotary engines in the Blue Angel jets? I thought they were jet-propelled. Is it the same thing, just with a different type of output? I know the obvious advantages to a rotary powered airplane, but I thought most jets were jet-propelled (for lack of a better term)

i think bert may be exagerating a bit to include jet technology in with the rotary engine. in the loosest sense a jet engine is a rotary, since it spins instead of reciprocating. Anyhow, don't take him seriously, he is just messin around. honestly, i have always thought a turbo was very similar to a jet engine, but that is a whole other story.

also, i will be at the down east meet, if the FD holds together that long.

They got to be rotary engines, don't you see all that smoke they put out on start up; they get lousy gas mileage and can run on kerosene, and they require a lot of maintenance, they probably have a higher CFM ratio than an FD.

When?

Is there a set time and location for the drive? Sounds like fun.

We don't have a set time to leave yet, depends on who is going and when we can get together. I'd say mid morning to leave Rawly and arrive in New Bern or Morehead City in 3-3.5 hours or so. We can spend Saturday admiring our cars and caravan in to Cherry Point in formation on Sunday.

I am trying to get the guys on the Performance Freaks site to let me know how many will show on Saturday.

Lee, you driving your 7 to Vegas, now that is a trip and a challenge. I can only admire someone who is so committed to their car that they would take her to Las Vegas. Is Linda going with you?

Yes, we will meet up and all go as a rotary formation, just depends on how many that arrive as to what formation we will use.

Down East Drive

Now we got to start planning for the Down East Drive on the weekend of May 8-9. Who is going and who is staying over or coming back down for the Blue Angels Performance on Sunday.

Several Options, Some are planning on going down on Saturday and staying over for the drive into Cherry Point and the air show.

Some might want to drive down on Sunday and meet us in Havelock and go into Cherry Point from town together.

Also some can drive down both days after returning home on Saturday night.

For those wanting to stay over we need to determine how many and then where we're gonna stay, New Bern or Morehead City, or some place else, and how many rooms we'll need to stay down there.

We also need to fix a meeting location in Raleigh and a departure time for the drive.

I'll post a new thread for this event so everyone speak up and let your fellow RRDI members know that you are going and what you want to do.

I asked people about this on the Saturdays in Raleigh page, but my posts kept ending up at the bottom of the pages... so I have no idea if I can go. I asked for that Saturday night off, so I know I will be able to FINALLY make it to a RRDI meet... I know y'all missed me!

Can't Make the Drive

I hate to report this but I won't be making the drive down east. Work! I have to work both Saturday and Sunday due to some smart people quitting and the rest of us having to fill in their shifts. The only good thing is it'll all be overtime.

Please go down and meet with the east guys. I don't know who is going to show up. I can't post on the Performance Freaks site anymore, I get an error saying only moderators can post, reply, or start new threads. If someone from eastern NC reads this and can reply on the events forum please let us, the guys on this site, know how many down east owners plan on making it to New Bern for the meet.

From what little I know about New Bern the only large parking area is the Tryon Palace parking areas and maybe the local airport. Need a designated meeting spot in New Bern and on Sunday a place to meet in Havelock or outside Cherry Point MCAS for the Blue Angels.

Rotary Down East Drive - In

Yea, I won't be able to make it for the airshow either since it's on Mother's Day. I was hoping I could make it but it's just a bad weekend for me as well. Bert, sorry to hear you can't make it too.

Fine, I see how it is... My Mother is 500 miles away, all she gets is a phone call.

No one wants to hang out with me, that's cool, I've got to put my turbo back on anyway.

Is this thing going down or not? So far nobody has said they are coming. I haven't even heard a meeting place or time yet.

I am up for going, I just live down the road from Havelock/Cherry point.

Anyone else? When? Where? Is the Air Show still going to happen with the weather?
