New To GA and a 87 Needs a rebuild.. Help wanted!

i am new to the area which is not much of a problem but i have never touched a rx7 before...

oh i am in fort gordon next to Augusta ga

i have not seen too many of these running around here and i also have never seen the inside of one of these (i am picking mine up in 2 weeks) so i was wondering if i could get up with someone that has one that could just show me the basics... i could drive to meet you somewhere and talk to chat over the phone... anything would help me greatly...

also if someone in the area has some stuff they are trying to get rid of please call me... i am looking for a repair manual (i will get that myself) but if there is something that is unique to a newbe that would help greatly... or the thing that i am really looking for is a video that is made just for the rx7...

thanks for looking...

Imennoharm,

Good news, everythings online so it's pretty much "lookup the symptom in the repair manual, follow steps 1-5". download the shop/repair manual here:

1986-1988
http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1986_1988/
1989-1991

What's the condition of the car you're buying? If it's in good condition you can just concentate on basic maintenance, fixing any minor stuff, upgrades, and improvements.

You can start educating yourself with the general "FAQ for 2nd gens" found in this website's "2nd generation specific" forum. Here's a direct link:

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/faq-fc-frequently-asked-questions-2nd-generation-rx-7-a-181219/

You probably don't realize this, but the RX-7 community is Humungous and you can spend nearly a lifetime visiting all the communities, bulletin boards, professional racing circuits, ameteur racing circuits, rotary carshops, aftermarket peformance parts, racing parts, bodykits, toy models, etc.. etc...

Not sure what you mean by "seals."

If your concerned the engine is low on compression, you can verify this farely easy. Several folks have a "rotary compression tester" that easy to use and will test each rotor housing and each rotor face for compression. If all 6 "hot compression" numbers are good, then the engine doesn't need a rebuild (assuming there's not an obvious oil or coolant leek). That takes all of 20 minuets.

If you have a low compression engine, you can get the various gaskets, apex seals, corner seals, etc.. etc.. from quite a few different vendors. Each vendor has different rebuild kit levels that can range from $500-$1000 depending on what needs repairing (or what SHOULD be replaced when you tear down an engine).

There's also several rebuild videos you can buy that compliment the factory service manual's rebuild steps.

Atkins rotary is one of the vendors, but there's lots of others. www.atkinsrotary.com

atkins is a good place to get new apex seals and such but when it comes to getting there gasket kits i warn people. the fc and fd factory gasket kit has press metal intake gaskets, the atkins kits use a paper gasket instead. this isnt a problum if you never remove the intake but if you do the paper gaskets **** out. And yea like clayton said when you are looking to buy or sell a rotor its a great idea to get a compression test. it lets you know where your motor is at. and when selling its a great thing to show to buyers.... to prove the motor is good. I happen to have a old school mazda rotary compression tester and i bet i have done 200 tests in the 4 years i have had it. its also a good idea to get a person that has good knoledge of the gen your looking at getting join you when looking over a car. they should know all the tale tale signs and the hiden secrets you find a few mts after you get the car.
