NC emissions question
Hey owners in NC, question for ya.....I am currently in Greenville, sc but I am looking into a Job in the charlotte area. great job paying 6 figures so it should be a no brainer, however, the big but is I am right in the middle/at the end of my single turbo FD and I freaking love my car. I obviously removed all my emissions equipment making room for my turbo kit and Im curious how stringent the emissions test is in NC. I have a custom 3 inch midpipe with a cat welded in place that I can swap out for emissions testing if need be. I read on the NCDOT that they don't require OBD emissions testing on anything older than a 96 so I doubt if anyone will check super hard into the engine bay but Im just looking for anyone with experience in the matter. if my car wont be able to be registered In NC I wont take the job period. One of the big attractions is location as I would love to Live in charlotte and I don't want to commute long term.
I had safety and emission license in NC years ago. I no longer maintain that credential.
They will check headlights, blinkers, tail lights, reverse, license plate lights, and other road worthiness checks.
They will also plug in OBD ports and tail probe to check for emissions. If you have active CEL or DTC stored in the OBD, then you will automatically fail the inspection.
While, the safety and emission equipment inspection can be simply overlooked (depending on who you go see) but emission sniff test is little difficult because the tail probe is inserted in the pipe to read the exhaust while simultaneously monitoring RPM through OBD.
On a personal note, I think you should take the job and get your car registered in your friends place by filling out TI-006a. I know a few things about SC DMV.
I probably gave you one of the best advises in your life.
I have 3 cars registered in SC. I live all over United States.

from the NC DOT website "cars older than 25 years old or before 1996 do not undergo the OBD emissions inspections" also I have heard that they do not do a tail pipe insert in NC from others. Can anyone confirm this that has a built car in NC currently?
For any car 96 or older, safety inspection only. They should just check the lights, horn, tires
and brakes. Since it only nets them $13.50, most places just have you honk the horn, press the brake,
do the signals and turn on the lights. No emissions on your FD (assuming 95 or older).
The place I take my SA to doesn't even open the hood or put it on a stand. They just yell at me
to turn on various lights and press the brakes then write me up. If you come up PM me and I
can give you the details on the place to go. I live up by lake norman.
