I live in Atlanta and was contemplating buying a radar detector, but don't want to wast my money if the cops all use laser. Is there a difference between what the highway cops use and street cops?

i drive to Atlanta alot and ive only picked up radar(in town). then again out of the hundreds of times ive been there my radar detector might have gone off 3 times(in town). i cant really imagine getting a ticket in atl either, most of the traffic goes 20+ mph over the speed limit anyways, unless its lunch time of 5 o'clock traffic.
