Four students killed in N.C. car accident

Four students killed in N.C. car accident

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A speeding car went airborne as it crossed a highway exit bridge, crashing to the ground 58 feet below and bursting into flames late Saturday. Four high school students were killed, officials said.

The victims were seniors at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, principal Stephen G. Takacs said.

The car, a 2004 Mazda RX-8, took an exit bridge over Interstate 440 and hit a concrete barrier, police said.

The car skidded along the barrier for 410 feet before rising over it, flying 224 feet forward and dropping to the ground, where it rolled and burst into flames, police said.

The victim's identities were not immediately released.

You have to feel sorry for them and think about their families but WOW how FAST were the going for all that to happen? seems like it would have been a little over the speed limit. still even though, its horrible that it happened and the famillies need to be remebered

"Witnesses said the car was going in excess of 100 mph."

While witness accounts of speed are notoriously over estimated, assume they were still moving at a pretty good clip.

Update: http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/415158.html including a picture of the site, so you can understand what happened.

Yeah. they go to a local high school here near where I live... I am always speeding on that road. Kinda scared me to find this out. I sure won't be speeding like that down 64E (or anywhere else for that matter) anymore.

Such an eye opener.

My mom said the news said they were going about 120. How sad.

Like I said... I sure won't be doing that anymore with my rotary. Not if the RX-8 burst into flames!

You know the people in the backseat might have been able to get out if it had been a NORMAL 4 door instead of the weird suicide door crap?

SO sad.

A high school kid with an Rx-8, if I ever have kids I will make sure he either knows how to drive defensively (intelligently) or he won't have a car that can do that kind of speed.

I feel sorry for their families, especially the victims that were helpless in the car. It really is a tragedy.

Stina, the kids in the back had chance...they flew off an overpass and fell 60 ft, then burst into flames. Hopefully, they all died at impact, I would hate to think they burned to death. My heart goes out the families and friends...let this be a lesson.
