Dyno Day in Columbia (Results)

So... we had our free pulls at the dyno today, thanks to R1 FD owner Richard Matthews. It was a lot of fun seeing what all the cars would do and getting to meet Richard, his family and friends. I had a blast! Plus I got to bust my dyno cherry!

Ok, now for the meat and bones. I am posting a pic of my dyno sheet but I won't know how it looks until I post, so.... my hp peaked at 117.5 @6100, torque was 113.1 @ 4800. No wideband measurement but I was running rich for sure! No backfire though, which was a pleasant surprise. Counting 15% drivetrain loss, that would put me at about 138 @ the flywheel.

As some of you know I have only recently installed the weber and am still experimenting with the jetting and venturis. I am quite pleased with my numbers, considering that I don't have the tuning and timing dialed in where I want it yet. Plus it was a bit warm, maybe around 90 degrees. So I'm thinking that under ideal conditions and proper tuning, my setup would be making around 125-130 at the wheels. That puts me at about 150 at the flywheel. I know the stock 12A is 100 (pretty sure that's at the flywheel) so with only an exhaust and carb upgrade I have a 50% increase over stock! This falls in line with what I have read that the weber and rb exhaust would make about 150. So like I said, I am very pleased.

If you all could offer your input as to why my peaks are where they are, etc. that would be great. If you could further elaborate with suggestions as to how my carb settings and timing may impact these numbers, that would be even better!

Jamin and Toby please feel free to tack onto this thread with your dyno results, if you would like. It was good seeing you guys again, thanks for coming out and joining me (unlike some FD owner who was a no-show)!

Full RB streetport exhaust, Weber 45DCOE sidedraft carb. It kind of goes without saying with those mods, but I have no emissions.

I was the only carbed car at the dyno today! I thought I was going to be the low number man of the day, and I was until some of those civics got up there, LOL! I wouldn't have minded being the low man though, as stated previously I am very pleased.

Some of the civics didn't even crack 100! Talk about disappointed owners!

Thanks Eli. What does that dyno chart tell you? Like I said I have never been on one so analyzing it is just as new to me. I would appreciate your thoughts.

BTW the top dog there was a late Supra, 684hp. It needs it to push around that 3800 pounds though, lol. Unfortunately Richard's R1 FD was in need of a good tuning. His A/F was at 8 under 15psi! However, being the man of integrity that he is he did not tune his car to achieve better results. The Supra guys were giving him hell too, but he just smiled and said "next time". That's class, boys. He said before the event "no tuning" and he stood by that, even for himself. Mucho props 4 Richard!

Crap, didn't know you started one! Sorry Toby!
That new O2 sensor and a good tuning will do wonders for you! I am 100% positive we did not see the best of your car today.

Well I have no experience with a Dyno, but it looks like its making power Consistantly throughout the RPM range that tells me that the engine is real healthy. And its already making more power than mine did stock.

Yes I agree with your asessment about the motor being healthy. Hopefully I will be able to keep it that way! The nosedive at the end can most likely be attributed to my carb needing further adjustment with the jets, I'm guessing?? What did your car make stock? That is surprising.

In 1987 the NA 7 made 146bhp. And I would say any car will have a dip in power at the end of the RPM spectrum

Wow, quick math tells me that dropping a 13B in mine would have been about as cheap as my mods, with a higher ceiling lol. Oh well...

But that would take away from the clean, original appeal of the car. And that would be more important than tha ponies 2 me.

Looking at your Dyno graph I see that you have a very healthy motor.
You have very smooth curves for both your torque and power band.
I also noticed you have no breaks in your curves.

You're looks much different from mine...

Yes it does look different. Is that 2 runs with different boost levels on yours mated together?

Oh yeah, what do you think is the cause of my nosedive there at the end? To be honest I don't have faith in the accuracy of the graph since he didn't even redline it?? I told him it probably wouldn't pull past 7 but he could take it to 8 for a quick hit. My rpm was way off when they first hooked it up, by like 2k rpm. You should have seen it when they took the first rotary in there (Jamin's T2). They were scratching their heads wondering where in the hell to hook up the sensor, lol.

LOL - they probably hooked it up as a 4 cylinder car. The nose dive is common, as you can see on mine it does the same thing at the end. Which is redline. I've seen that on several graphs. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Go to a dyno lab that KNOWS how to hook up a rotary engine to the dyno and if it shows up there pre-redline then I would question it.

Yes that is my first pull which I had turbo problems... it was never switching from the primary to the secondary... 11 pulls later we got everything resolved and tuned up. I think there's still room for improvements on mine... think most of the problem I'm having with not having a smooth curve is my maxed out injectors which should be resolved here soon with 850cc / 1200cc injectors that should be in this week.

Those guys today were...well,pretty damned clueless! Not to mention reckless and careless, too. On the second pull (not graphed) the guy had my emergency brake on and was wondering why it was about to stall on him, lol. He had that "oh ****" look on his face like he had damaged something. Lucky for me, it was just his pride.

Oh yeah, Richard's was the 4th rotary they ran today. They still asked if it should be run as a 4 or 6 cylinder, lol. I definitely won't be taking my 7 there for any work on it, to say the least!

Sweet, new injectors and new clutch! Then its autox time for the FD!

Yea, they need to hook it up as a 6 cylinder. FYI.

And yea, too bad I don't have it all already. Oh well. =\

What kind of impact do you think the temperature being so hot today had on my results? You missed out on the girls in bikinis! Nevermind, they were fat skanks!

Yeah even though it was my first time at the dyno, I am quite familiar with stupidity. For example if it was my place I wouldn't allow people to be in the garage when the cars ran, or at least have it roped off around the roller. Not this place! Everyone and their grandmother was in there, babies in strollers, etc.
