So that makes the RX7 SP even more rare than a Spirit R... wow! How much do SPs go for in the Australian market?

Yeah much much more rare also it has a proven racing pedigree totaly crushing Porsche, BMW, and other makes in production endurance racing here in Australia.

Cost wise they go for around 40k Australian at the moment (in std form) *bargain*

To the bloke who asked what my obvious background is, I am not a drag racer and have never done that. Circuit driving is what I am interested in primarily, that lap was a bit rough because it was my first/only lap in that car at speed, I was under pressure to set a decent time and hence over drove the car a little. In retrospect it made a pretty exciting video so I am glad all you people who have commented get some enjoyment out of watching it

Great video, I have good and BAD memories of Wakefield Park.
The very first RX7-SP front spoiler that came out of the mould was fitted to a car and was taken to Wakefield Park that day and our test driver Gary Waldon some how crashed the test car. (very unusual for Gary to crash) the radiator, oil coolers and bonet were distroyed and the Carbon Fibre front ended up getting repaired and used as a spare for the race team. Eastern Creek was used for most of the testing and development of the RX7-SP

I can testify to how Pete drives at Wakefield park..

He is completely and totally insane!!

I gave him the keys to my car, I sat in the passenger seat.
Pete got in, having never driven an FD in anger, and having not driven at Wakefield Park for a long time.
First lap ...Warmup lap.
Approx 1-2 seconds QUICKER than my fastest ever lap.
Laps 2-4 approx 3-4 seconds quicker!!!

This on a fairly stock FD3s.

I let him go out a bit later in the day when he proceeded to slash my best time further.

Scariest thing was it was a fairly wet day at the track, (With water flowing like a creek over one corner) and he still beat my best times by the above amounts...and I was driving in the dry! (Admittedly I drive fairly slowly )

Very good driver..who hopefully will give me some more tips when my car is back on the road.

His SP is very neat and tidy...the photos don't show the level of detail very well...and the Video doesnt show how quick this car really is..kinda scary sitting in the passenger seat of his car whilst he is on a private bit of twisty road.

What kind of time did he manage at wakefield, and how does his times compare to other vehicles......how do the lap times compare to newer performance vehicles eg hsv's?? I notice the clubsport near the end of the lap moving at a vastly lower speed. Was that a 108.44?

A top spec EVO or STI will do 1:10's in the hands of a professional racing driver there. I did a 1:08.44 on a single lap in very hot conditions.

HSV's 1:12 region

The tires I had are similar to top spec road tires *very hard compound* and I did not warm them up (half lap v's the 3 laps they need to come good) because of the 30+deg C ambient conditions killing engine performance too much.

In a few months I will have the BNR's on (thanks Brian !) and a bit of weight removed from the car, I actualy been training pretty hard to improve my fitness and hopefully driving as a result

Wow, sounds like the rx7 still kicks some ***. Unfortunately because of the age of our cars you don't see them compared to newer cars.

I have friend with a 270kw ss, brand new, and he thinks he is hot tamouli. I muat admit it is a nice car. Would love to see it compared to my 2001 rx-7 by a mag though. I am sure it would be defeated in almost every way b a 7.

The only comparison/ review I have seen recently is the 7 vs a 200sx, a R34 GTS skyline, and a supra. The Rx7 won becaue of its incredible grip and smooth long power delivery.

On another topic....Are the BNR's a much cheaper alternative to going single? I have been quoted about 10k to go single. Would BNR's be less installed? Did you have to send your turbo's to the U.S??

Holy **** man, you can DRIVE! Very cool

EDIT: Anyone have more info on the SP models. Also, you're motor etc. is only a bolt on motor? You've got a PFC, is it tuned.. how much power, etc.?

The engine is set to the maximum of what the stock fuel system can deliver (in a safe way for track work)
It equals about 410bhp @ flywheel. Through semi slicks on our dyno's in Australia it makes 318rwhp as a reference.

Car weight as tested with full tank of gas (110lt capacity!) and driver etc is 1350kg

PFC
HKS DLI
SMB SP exhaust system
RR tuning
Rest Factory SP specifications (for engine)

Thank you.

Thats what she was made for *track use* when Mazda did the prototype M1020 concept, a good club racer. Mazda Australia turned the concept it into a production supercar killer reality/nightmare (for Porsche & BMW & others) with the SP. Pitty there were only 25 originals made for homolgation purposes (around 35 all up). When we have our track days there is usualy one or two genuine SP's there which is always cool to see being such an important part of winning rotary motorsport history

if you were patient enough to read more of the posts on that page, you would have seen that someone else hosted the video.

Such a rare car. I wish Mazda USA would take lessons from you guys and have given us SPs for public consumption

Impressive driving rice, and even more impressive car .

So your FD weights 2970 pounds with driver and 27 gallons of fuel (assuming I did my conversions right)?

I think it's pretty damn cool that I inspired you to bolt some BNRs on that beast, kickass
