BOV sound files
Go to www.blowoffvalves.com to listen to different BOVs. But it's only a starting point as far as making a decision on a BOV. I say this because the files are the sounds of different BOVs on different cars with different turbos and different levels of boost.
My cousin has an 05 WRX with a GFB, and the file on www.blowoffvalves.com sounds just like my cousin's car -- lots of air rushing. I first heard it as he was revving his engine in front of my house, and I was about 100 feet away. It makes the car sound like it's boosting 2 bar. The thing's almost too loud.
So you can gauge how your car might be different from mine, these are some of the modifications on my car:
93 FD Touring
Apexi Power FC
Efini downpipe
Greddy Evo2 exhaust
HKS blow-off valve
TEIN Flex Type (bcuz things are louder if the car is lower to the ground)
The first BOV I tried was Apexi Twin Chamber. Compared to the stock BOV's, the Apexi unit produced an audible air rushing sound, but it would never get louder than just "audible." It also could not hold the boost, even at stock levels. Two of my friends have agreed on the leaking boost issue with the Apexi unit.
Then I purchased a Greddy Type S. The greatest variance in the sound on my car and on the site's sound files was with the Greddy Type S. On my FD at 0.77kg/cm^2 boost (11 pounds), it makes a moderate air rushing sound, and no whistle, but on the aforementioned site, some of the Greddy Type S files have the air rushing sound followed by an extended whistle. Never got any whistle on my FD. The Greddy Type S also holds the boost very well, so well in fact that it's the only BOV I've used where I could unmistakeably feel the secondary *kick* the car forward under full throttle acceleration. The fact that it holds the boost so well made me wonder if it was actually purging effectively between shifts....
My third and current BOV is the HKS Super Sequential. This BOV will produces the most *aggressive* and loudest sound of the three. Shifting below 3000 rpm will produce a fairly loud air rushing sound. Above 3000 will give you a louder air rushing sound which is almost completely dominated by a *piercing* whistle/sqweak.
**Let off the throttle easily between shifts unless you're inviting a street race or really want to get a cop's attention.**
I like this one the best because it holds boost almost as tightly as the Greddy BOV, but it also purges much better. However, the HKS BOV *does not* fit with the Greddy Airinix intakes due to the hard pipes that come with the kit (btw don't waste your money on the Apexi intakes, there was NO difference in sound or performance, just a hour of frustration cuz the parts didn't fit and the kit was almost $300). You should be able to use the HKS with the stock rubber intake pipes. The Greddy Type S fit nicely with the Airinix intakes, and the Type RS is the same size, so that's food for thought.
The Greddy Type RS hopefully has the boost-holding capabilities of the Type S and louder output. I was considering getting the Type RS, but I've spent too much on BOVs at this point. If you do get the Type RS, let me know how it sounds.

It sounds way better in real life.I have one on my TII.
It can sound like a greddy type S and type R depending on how you adjust it.

And there is one more sound it can make.
