Wink My 13B N/A with 3" Xorst - SOUNDS + VID

Since the EPA have complained about my exhaust, I'll be muffling it in the next few days. I felt it was my duty to go out there with some decent recording gear and get some recordings of how it sounds as-is :-)

If you have a sub, turn it on :P

Audio clips (all files are pretty small except the long version of startup)
Start + idle (short 128kb) or Start + idle + drive (long 1MB)

Reasonable Acceleration

Cruising at about 2500rpm + horn (some idiot coming towards me on my side of the road)

The Tunnel!

Exiting the tunnel!

Driveby 1 (accelerate/let off)

Driveby 2 (accelerating)

Video clip
Video - Thanks Ben!

Enjoy!

Cheers for the positive comments guys,

Well I just popped a new muffler on The sound is not much different, i little muffled, not so harsh sounding any more :P and past 4000rpm it doesnt seem to get any louder any more :P If anything, quieter lol.. Still not legal tho.

3" straight through. The engine can breathe!

i got a mate with a minidisc recorder and a studio microphone. a bit of $$ there. We did all the clips from in the car cept the 'driveby' one. held the mic to the centre glove-box thing. for the driveby he sat the mic about 4 feet off the ground on top of a rubbish bin. hehe you can hear birds tweeting and then my car spoils the scene haha

Exhaust manifold 2 pipes join up to a 3" tube.

This goes straight into a new high-flow 3" catalytic converter (no air pump needed).
http://rx7.pw.cx/photos/AREAS/exhaus...rter%20009.jpg

3" into a small resonator (which ill be replacing soon - as its too low and battered as hell).

3" over the axle
http://rx7.pw.cx/photos/AREAS/exhaus...more%20003.jpg

and into a 3" muffler - 3" tip.

heh, so everything is 3" :P

The recordings were with the setup described in this post - now I have the muffler as pictured above - which has a more muffled sound to it - and past about 4000rpm doesnt seem to get louder

Cheers lol, it has good and bad effects on people nearby HAHA.. Driving into the tunnel you usually get a few ppl who are loading shopping into their cars and they just stand still and stare a bit shocked. Then coming out, there is a bus stop nearby across the road, they hear all this noise then see my shoot out the end hahaha! Always amusing Oh and then you get the older folks who look like they are yelling and waving their arms (not that I can hear them)... Loud doesnt mean unsafe :P Silly people.

Today had a 3" resonator fitted::

Sounds ... indifferent haha... The old one I pulled out, the inside tubing was all bent up. Pretty bad. It could be a little quieter lol.. At least its higher off the ground now - 12.5 cm as opposed to ~8cm.

glad i don't have to worry about any of that crap, here in Alaska you can just get seasonal tags and have no worries all spring summer fall... i have a 3" downpipe and a 3" titanium exhaust... straight through.

if you wanna host a vid of it, i'll e-mail it to you.

What brand and model are the exhuast components that are used in the clip. This is the best sounding RX7 i have ever heard and is somewhat of the sound i want.

heh cheers, it was all custom made.

my best guess at reproducing that sound is a set of extractors which join to 3", then through a 3" hi-flow cat, 3-4" resonator then 3" straight thru muffler... thats pretty much my setup.. its all straight through so I dont think brands will have much to do with it.

I guess the intake and fuel injection setup may also alter the sound.. My fuel injectors are not wired up right which probably causes it to sound weird at idle. Also its a 6 port engine with the auxiliary port sleeves removed, so running all 6 ports all the time.

Hope this can help with getting the sound you want. FYI the volume of this is about 104 dBA when measured about 2 feet from the back of the exhaust at 4500rpm. It's fairly loud but certainly musical - a touch too loud for relaxing freeway cruising heh, but it sings in the hills

the latest muff is 3" straight through - Avo Turbo World 'SS' Muffler. Cost about $180 USD

H4Inf..... I have the 6-port in my '88 Vert it is all stock, since yours is running on all six ports would this affect the sound in any way or would it not matter.

Thanx man for all the info.

Also does any body have any clips of a 6-port with header or no header and a Apex N1. Every1 talks about how cool they sound but never actually heard one.

I am betting that it would affect the sound.. and how it runs too. Mine won't idle steadily unless I warm it up well for about 5-7 minutes first, then it will hold a steady idle about 1150rpm. Up until then it skips a few beats every now and then, dumping some fuel out the exhaust.

I'm also running an aftermarket ECU so I don't have an AFM to get in the way of airflow, that would also contribute to the sound. My pod filter is boxed though so intake noise is only audible if you are in front of the car on the left side of it hehe, but taking the cover off the box it sounds nice

3" Exhaust is a little big for a N/A but leaves me room for upgrading to turbo later if I want to, but sounds phat haha..
