Uh...the NSX in the vid is what is known as a "pace car" since it has lights on top of it (the vid was shot at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan). The FD driver is pulling over to let him by...

LOL idk, but from the looks of the vid, the FD was going WOT many times and couldnt catch up..if the nsx was a pace car, why are they going fast like they were racing..
but even though, still a cool vid, whoever won..

The FD sounds stock, you all remember the "woooshing" sound the stock exhaust puts out don't you?

Upon further examination, it appears to be a track day, and the FD is obviously running some street tires that don't provide a whole lot of traction, judging by the lack of midcorner grip and tire squeal. The NSX-- being the track pace car-- is surely running sticky tires and is most likely being piloted by a track expert.

LOL, of course a better setup car is going to be faster. But on the other hand, I've been to way too many HPDEs where NSXs are nothing more than rolling chicanes...

I'm gonna jump in here
Some observations from someone (me) who's done a fair number of HPDEs. And instructed quite a few also in any variety of cars from Civics to Vipers, from Z06's to S2000's, Supras to Mustangs, and more FDs than I care to count.
I can say this:
1) The FD looks pretty much stock. No gauges, stock looking interior, etc.. Bench racers may chime in that stock for stock the FD and the NSX are fairly comperable in performance so in a straight line the FD is NOT going to catch the NSX. The NSX was what the Mazda engineers after all used as a benchmark when developing the FD so many years ago.
2) The FD is on street tires - I've driven a stock FD on street tires on the track (a friends) and a modifed FD on R-compound rubber (mine) and the FD in this clip is DEFINITELY on street tires. The NSX is a big question. Even so the FD is NOT going to significnatly *gain* on the NSX due to tire choice if the drivers abilities are equal.
And then there is the driving:
3) The FD driver is certainly giving it his all. Tire howl, and the degree of correction for oversteer indicates he is pushing the car decently. However, oversteer and correction through a corner is NOT the fastest way through. Each time he has to correct he looses ground to the NSX.
4) The NSX was a faster car. In HPDEs the faster car is always given the pass - VOLUNTARILY. It does not appear to be a race given the lack of safety gear for the driver (he does have a helmet but I don't think that is a driving suit he's wearing) and since this was not a race it would be customary for the FD to let the NSX by.
5) The NSX appears to be faster for any number of protential reasons. The NSX has nice smooth corners with good exit speed. No apparent driving corrections from the NSX. And since exit speed dictates top speed at the end of the straight the NSX having the faster exit speed appears to, make that WILL, pull on the FD.
6) At the risk of stating the obvious, note that racing interval are NOT dicated by distance but by time. That is why it looks like the NSX is pulling the FD on the straights but yet the FD closes up the distance at the corners. Time is the interval not the distance.
7) To me the NSX is not appreciably faster (as a car) than the FD. In fact when the FD doesn't have to slow to correct oversteer in a corner the FD seems quite adept at staying with the NSX. And I'd submit that if the FD is on street tires and NSX is on more track worthy tires even more credit should be given to the FD even if in this situation the NSX was faster.
It is however what it is. Is it the NSX driver that is faster or is it the NSX that is faster then the FD. I'd hang my hat on the former but with the unkowns about the cars it is most likely a combination of both.
As to the thread title about an FD getting it's a** handed to it, I believe the thread author is speaking out of ignorance and not out of knowledge.

Enough with the good hearted bantering. Thanks for calling this vid to our attention. It is always interesting to see any good track vids of our car, no matter the outcome. You can always watch the driver's inputs and results and learn something from them.
Based on my experience, the NSX driver is driving a little better angle into the corners. In the straights, the RX-7 appears to catch up or at least stay even because he's able to plunge a little deeper into the corner, probably due to weight/brake advantage, but his apex is wrong in several corners, at least in my opinion. The RX-7 driver does appear to let it hang out a few times on the exits and that costs him tenths of a second that might have put him even with the NSX. Something else that struck me is the RX-7 driver appears to make a quick shift from third into fourth, not fully developing the boost advantage he'd see from the second turbo coming on line with tons of horse power. Or am I just halucinating?
Anyway, thanks for the vid.

After looking @ the Vid. I really don't think this was a race between the 2 cars.
Looks more like "rent a ride @ the race track".
The driver of the Rx7 was just for filling a dream.

First off...no hate from me. Just trying to help you understand a bit more what it is you are seeing from perhaps someone whose seen a bit more track time than yourself...perhaps.
Before getting your undies in a bind, just listen and maybe learn something. No need to get defensive. 'Twas not the intent of my post.
"you people need to grow up." - deliberately inflamatory stated out of frustration?
"so quick to talk down someone without even knowing anything." Huh?
As for me I'm assuming your beef is with Rich. If so no harm no foul.
If you do beleive "we" are attacking your thread then I think the issue was with the way you titled the thread. At least from my perspective (and others apparently). It is of course your right to call it whatever you want. Titles that sensationalize the content are obviously going to get more hits. However when the title is most likely factually incorrect well one might come to expect some critical feedback, no?
