Next Rtek interface platform

Palm's are increasingly hard to find and the cables are being discontinued. As much as I like the Palm platform, we need to move away from it.

So what platform would you like to see the Rtek Stage 2 tuning software running on?

having it run on a laptop gives the end user that much greater flexibility with their car. No more having to tap out 52098759876234 fuel corrections on a little palm screen.

I'm concerned that if you go with another mobile/PDA platform, you are going to have the same problem again. The hardware just changes too fast. Go with a regular Windows based platform like everybody else, as long as it doesn't present some technical hurdle that I am unaware of.

While I agree it's the most universal platform, Not everyone has or wants to use a laptop so doing the same thing "everybody else does" isn't necessarily the right thing to do. And wheres the innovation in that?

And "the same problem again" meaning after 10 years (Palm has been around that long), the platform is not the best option out there, then so be it. I'll gladly port it again in 10 years...assuming there are RX7s still around.

While i like the Palm platform, it would be nice to have it multi-platform. Like what some said already. A windows based platform might be the best route. I voted Windows Mobile.

I have owned the 2.0 before and sold it because I didn't like the Palm interface.

I would buy another one if it were a windows based application, otherwise I'm going Haltech.

I voted Windows Laptop.

If this were to happen the next big project would be a carputer. If not that, I like the idea of using my daily laptop instead of sync-ing so often, dealing with malfunctioning capacitors,etc..

I love my RTek as is , but if a windows laptop option is offered I'd jump on it for the sake of ease.

The only thing that sucks with a laptop is how many times are you going to look at your labtop to monitor and make adjustments...its so much easier to have a small WM device that you can mount easily in your car.

Yeah, I'm surprised that so many people are willing to lug a laptop around with them.

How about some sort of a hand controller, like the microtech one or something like that. It's nice to tune "on the go" with a hand controller but nice to log and make change's on the laptop where you can get a good full veiw of everything. But that's also additional cost . . would be nice though

This thread is my main motivation: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...light=carputer

I've been interested in carputers for a while, so something to accomodate this would be ideal in my case.

I do agree a laptop would be cumbersome.

Trying to stay away from any kind of dedicated hardware as it brings up the cost significantly.

If Linux is chosen, the Asus EEE is a simple solution to standard laptops as well.

I have to admit, i do like the size of my palm for monitoring. I can turn the screen sideways on mine and it makes a nice little quad guage when i hang it where my stereo goes.

Isn't there a way to run windows embedid on a laptop? That would be a great choice.

I would be thrilled if it was Windows Mobile compatible and if there was a Windows emulator for a laptop. I use my windows mobile device for everything and I think many people will be using WM phones and WM based UMPC's in the next few years.

I like using the palm also. Its small and easy to use. I don't know if I can see myself having to bring around a laptop all the time or when I feel like messing around with the tune at random times.

It would be nice to be able to make large changes (say entire timing map) on the computer though and then plug the palm back into the car.

also agreed. bring the laptop for dyno days or for home tuning/setup/ diagnostics or dataloggit viewing......and then use a palm for simple on the fly street changes or WHY, same applies to using windows mobile or an I-phone.

ideally i would like to be able to use a laptop and SOME sort of in car interface that doesnt involve a fullsize computer (and yes, the Asus EEE counts..)

I'm looking at rtek 2.1 for next summer when i do my na-t conversion. It would be nice to have the availability on a computer ( i would prefer linux, but i can deal with windows ).
But on the mobile end, since palm is becoming somewhat harder to come by (i heard cables are becoming discontinued?) I would love android to be capable. Unlike the iphone, android is not limited to one device, and google is being incredibly open with 3rd party software development.
