Racer died at the track last weekend. **Pictures**
Very sad for the racers family. His name was scott Williams.
Yes, the car had a cage and yes the driver was wearing a harness. He apparently got out of shape, hit the metal guard rail, flew over the rail and hit the scoreboard I-Beam. It tore the car into three peices. I tell you this, I won't be racing at any tracks with metal guard rails.

It costs alot of money ($150,000+) but it should be required.

Those super street outlaw cars have always scared the **** out of me....they make in excess of 1700rwhp, run on a (true) 10.5"W tire and trap over 180mph! I don’t know how many of ya'll have seen them on the track before but its just nuts because the damn thing is all over the track till the shoot opens! I just heard about this car today from a friend who was there at the track but had left right before it happened. Really really sad.....

They don't call it the "Freak Show" for nothing.
Rest in peace Scott Williams. I don't think it's the guard rails, accidents happen and when you hit a big steel pole, airborne, that shreds the car your chances are slim to none. Concrete or no concrete: the tire tracks ended before the rail, the rail did not have a colapse or break through, the car was said to have gone airborne. We as humans should understand when we get into a car, street or strip, there may be some things that will eventually happen to some of us that we cannot help or avoid.
My condolences to the family and friends.

Thats horrible.
Ive always personally disliked the metal guardrails some tracks still retain.
Our track is lined with concrete non-belled 'jersey' barriers and were sanctioned by the IHRA. To become NHRA legal now the adjacent barriers lining the track must be one seamless barrier from starting line to the 1320 atleast
Also if you read the link they mention anchor cables on the boards during the races! thats insane! just asking to cut a car in half
