Preparing for Pinks All Out, November 20th
Well, here I am again. I thank everyone for their advice on how to get traction. As you already know I got a 12.8 just before braking the Torsen limited slip differential into a million pieces.
I replaced the rear end, put some Torco 118 race fuel in the tank, and headed back to UMS to retune for the upcoming Pinks All Out race on Saturday November 20th, right here in Phoenix Arizona at Firebird International Raceway.
Now, for the good stuff....I am running a totally stock engine and fuel set-up, a T4 single turbo, a manual boost controller, a large intercooler, and open 3" exhaust (no cats). At first, things kind-of "crapped out" on the dyno, barely making 345 hp. With plenty of fuel and boost, we looked, and sure enough, worn plugs. We replaced the plugs, and got up to 370 hp, but lost some boost. We looked, and now, one of the intercooler piping clamps was not tightened. Then, as we started to rev up, someone noticed a bunch of liquid running out onto the floor at the rear of the car. Sure enough, I had not checked out the diiferential I installed. The drain plug was loose and had vibrated out onto the floor along with all the differential fluid. After cleaning everything up, tightening the differential drain plug, and filling it back up, we finally got back to TUNING.
The results...401.8 rwhp and 366.3 ft lbs of torque on 118 octane leaded race fuel and 20 lbs of boost. Not bad for a totally stock engine and fuel system. The next step would be to add an HKS DLI ignition and harness (the stock ignition sputtered at full power), then add bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and more money, and more money, and even more money.

Thanks for the turbo offer, but I haven't broken that yet. If you are ready to watch me try to break something, come on out to "Pinks All Out" at Firebird Raceway on Saturday the 20th of November (that's next week).

Yes, I am old and senile. I meant to say "pump". Yah, right! I did not notice that they said "pump". Sorry about that.
Back to "stupid"....I almost ruined my new clutch, trying to "feather" a burn-out. I smoked it pretty good. I think I will just stick to a lower RPM launch and take my chances. I do not want to break something on national TV. The additional 55 HP and slicks really make a big difference. Test and tune is Friday 12-6pm at Firebird Raceway. Gates open 8 am Saturday for time trials.

Well.........I am embarrassed to say, "I had a great time at PINKS ALL OUT, but launching at 4000 rpm doesn't work. I bogged down. I went back ALL OUT at 6000 rpm----UNBELIEVABLE burnout with TV cameras, lots of photo flashes, and a terrific launch at Rich's arm drop. I was flying down the track in front of a cheering crowd, the only rotary out of 500 cars, making lots of noise, and going for the fantastic 3rd gear to blow them all away, when.....5th gear jumped in the way. Helpful hint....you cannot win in 5th gear, even if you finally do find 3rd. There was only .23 seconds between all of the final 32 cars. Again, you blink, you lose, you stumble, you lose, you miss 3rd gear, you go home. Rich, the star of PINKS, really teased us imports. There were only five of us. The rest were "American Muscle". When I was eliminated, that was the beginning of the end for the imports. When it came down to the final four and final two, Rich announced that he had received tons of e-mail comlpaints about not featuring any imports during the entire five year season of "Pinks All Out". He said they would put ANY import in the mix for the finals, if any one of them had qualified, but none of us did. We need to get some 10-second rotaries out there to show what we can do. THEN, we need to get idiots, like me, to get thier 11-second cars correctly into THIRD gear and run the socks off of these "lunks of steel". Anybody out there with me on that?

I really should've taken my 7, probably would've been one of the faster imports out there. I was pretty disappointed by the import turnout. I was there and saw your run. Is your tune ok? I'm not sure if it was just you missing 3rd, but it sounded like you had some major misfiring going on down the entire track..

Better luck next time
Yes you did hear something wrong. I blew my exhaust manifold gasket. Next time we need to show them some unstoppable import power-to-weight ratios.
