Ken's description of the final race.
'I am almost certain that the final round of eliminations during the final event of the season has to be the slowest, weirdest and most exciting for the fans and racers that were watching. Here's how it went down. We both did normal burn outs, the staging was normal, I had another good reaction time of 0.055 and the moment I pulled second gear I felt the explosion so I pushed in the clutch, the motor was revving at over 5000 rpm so I shut it off and began to pull over to the wall as I thought for sure that I had grenaded the motor and was oiling down the track when suddenly Eduard come on the radio and said "keep on going, he is broke too". I tried looking out the left side because I could hear Brent revving his motor but because of my Hans device, I couldn't turn my head far enough. I tried starting the engine up again but it would not run so I just moved myself back and fourth as best as I could in the seat trying to "help my momentum". I coasted to the winning 18.958 ET at a whopping 39.61 mph to Brent's 19.527 ET at 39.66 mph. MOV was a staggering 36 feet!
Brent had blown up his transmission and I thought the massive backfire had bent the throttle blade as we started it up in the pits after the race. The motor was OK believe it or not. The intake manifold front runner had split open down the inner seem weld. Just as well I didn't get the motor fired back up or I would have most likely caught the car on fire.'
The results of Ken's backfire.

I was at 3/4 track in the stands on that run. Everyone in the stands was on their
feet seeing who would win. It was like watching water boil.hehe. I was about to
run out there and push you but it looked like you had the lead. It was funny watching both of you try to re start and fumbling around to get you cars going. Great race and Congrats on the win.

Agreed!
Ray Charles wished he could weld up and intake that could take the stress that Ken have put it through.
I don't care who made the intake it would not survive all the problems he was having earlier.
Most of the times when you're racing there's no time to try new combinations so you gotta use what works no matter how many times you have blown it up and apart and have it re-welded.
An earlier backfire resulted in this.

i agree and where i am from a lott of people say to say pretty dont go fast and like crispeed said when their is no time to try new stuff you gotta use what has worked in the past and this ugly *** frankenstein is what put ken in the 7.276 @ 186MPH that was an ugly *** manifold

Isn't this a Gato built manifold? or did Gato build the first contraption/setup with the intercooler inside the cabin.. I though that backfires on top fuel cars was bad, but that had to be some extreme pressure in that 13b to break that weld..

When you experience a backfire pressure can be in the 100 psi range and above. I've seen casted stuff come apart like a soda can as a result of a backfire. Unless you have a billet manifold cnc'd from very thick materials in a one peice design which is impractical to do because there is always going to be a weak link somehwere in the chain and that's where it's going to release the pressure most often very violent and dangerous. It much safer to have an intake manifold come apart than a turbo compressor wheel exit the housing and through the body and who knows where that might end up.

in Sportcompact yes... the late John Lingenfielter (RIP) ran 6's in his 4cyl pickup truck a few years ago, also the VW guys have been doing it for some time now but they run billet blocks & big C.I. motors.. Hats off to Brent for making insane amounts of reliable horsepower with a mitsu 4cyl block... I think Pica will give him a good run for his money if he goes to PR... I've learnt in drag racing that anything can happen, just look at how ken won the last race & look at how Abel lost in the "easy win" in eliminations againt Boris
