High air intake temps ideas ?

Cool High air intake temps ideas ?

The few times I ran my FD my air intake temps became an issue on hot days. I know I am not the first on this subject but any feed back would be appreciated.

I just have a K&N slapped on the end of my T78. I sealed the **** out of my FMIC and Rad so my water temps are consistent and low 83c and 85c even on the hot days. However air intake temps range from 45c to 68c. I was told not to boost above 60c. It only happens to climb that high if I am sitting stationary, like at the track waiting to line up. For the little street driving I do its not a issue since I can chose my fights But it sucks to line up and have to take a slow pass since I don’t want to go boom…

So the obvious options are 1) a vented hood. 2) fabricate a cold air intake 3) spray the FMIC 4) water injection.

My feelings are vented hood look so so and the cost to get one and paint it is over $1000. Not sure if this is the biggest bang for the buck. I don’t like the look of any vented hoods so it would be on at the track only. Besides I hear of just minimal temperature reductions with vented hood, 5 – 10 degrees.

Cold air intake , the only thing I could come up with was a pipe with the air filter in the headlight assembly area. So just one functional head light. Another track only applications for this mod

Spraying the FMIC may be my best bet. Cost is low, under $700 and I could use it on the street also. I loose some truck space that’s about it I just haven’t had enough feed back on how effective they are.

Water injection scares me, I have enough lost sleep with just tuning the PFC. I see the water injection application for additional power, and I don’t need more( right now) Cost is low for most kits, but I don’t know anyone running this just to lower intake temps for the margin of safety it might give you.

If I missed something let me know, but after writing this I think I sold myself on Co2 again. Does anyone use the DEI set up with the sprayer, fuel bar chiller and the intake charge unit? It looks like a good solution

Wow, I'm surprised, those are stock mount intercooler temps. I typically see 45-55 on the street in the summer around here w/ stock twins and a small PFS cooler.

FWIW, I see up to about 70C on the track (road course) and I start backing off at 70, though I'm running 11-12 psi on 100 octane typically.

You might try relocating your IAT sensor, and maybe working on some sort of cold air intake and/or insulating some of your IC piping. Maybe even a vented headlight cover would get some fresh air in there. I'd also leave the hood up before runs.

I know you have a FMIC, I was just remarking that the temps you're seeing are typical of a stock mount IC.... which is surprising.

Got ya , they are lower then the PFS SMIC set up I had. However they are still a little hot for me.

Now that its cooling off it wont be a issue this fall, but next summer I have to get this worked out.

You could use heat shield between hot side and intake, good for 2000.00 deg. Also have seen some on the board say to remove or drill holes in plastic fender sheild behind oil cooler! GOOD LUCK

there was a guy who built a cold air intake out of 4" tube and ran it by where the oil cooler is. You can vent your hood for free, just have to cut it. If i remember correctly BoostedFD did it and has pics of it. You could do the cheap trick of putting bags of ice on your intake manifold until you get close to the line.
