Fun Weekend installing ALS Seals
Earlier this year I took a trip down to Florida with a few forum members and we stopped by Edgars shop and we talked about the ALS seals. I was sold then but still waited for a while to make sure others would not have any issues. I wanted to see other guys out there running them at high boost on Gas, not alcohol. So far on the forum and "off" the forum I have heard nothing but great things about these seals. Usually what you read on here is only one piece of the puzzle, there is a lot that goes on that no one will write about but so far only good stuff on the ALS seals.
Anyway, I called Edgar last week and ordered a set. He will be up for Pan Ams too. I had a lot going on last week, working on the house, travelling back and forth to Boston etc. 13B-Rx3 offered to lend a helping hand and I took him up on the offer. He stopped by and spent the weekend in NY and ate some good NY food!. Saturday night a few other forum members stopped by (Enzo, Roy, RotaryBoyz, Mike, 13brx3..) and we had a late night BBQ and talked rotaries until 4:00am! SpeedNYC was supposed to be there but we all know that story...
Anyway Allen and I pulled the motor and tore it down. Washed all the parts. I ported the motor myself and I hate porting and he showed me some things he did not like. He bought down some used housings (S5) that were worn (in his words) and we decided to use those instead of my ported housings. I followed the racing beat template but either way we used his rotor housings. He also showed me some things on my irons and cleaned them on the closing edge.
The next day we built the motor. I usually watch a video to make sure I don't forget anything and he got a kick out of that. He says he learned a few different things on there as well. I used the rotary aviation seal kit. I have had the same re-suable kit for about 4 years now. I did buy a new kit but my old kit was fine. I read on here that some people have issues with the coolant seals etc popping out so I decided to use the new kit now. Everything went in perfectly and easily.
We fire up the motor now and before running it decided to check the compression. We tumbled for a while to make sure it had oil pressure etc and to get the vaseline etc out of the engine. Tested the compression, it was 140 psi!!! We knew the vaseline etc is helping so I let the car run for 30 minutes and we are getting a solid 115 psi on both rotors! Keep in mind this is with used older housings but Allen can comment more on that.
So in the end it was a very fun weekend, hung out with some good friends and popped in some new ALS apex seals. I will be on the dyno on Friday at Enzo's place and then getting ready for the Pan American Event.
On a side note, I learned quite a few things hanging out with Allen (13bRx3) this weekend. That tool he made for the side seals is amazing. Such a simple took but the angle is perfect. I took a marker and marked the bevel side of a stock apex seal. He then put that seal on his tool and slid it over some sandpaper. All the ink was gone and perfectly even. Thanks Allen for all your help this weekend!!! See you guys at PAN AMs.
I'll have more info on the ALS seals shortly. Attached is a pic of the compression...
