Blew the tranny racing a Viper

Last night was nice so I decided to take the FD out around 1 am for a little drive. Drove about 30 miles to NYC. I met up with a few friends at a local race spot, there was supposed to be a race with a 9sec Supra and someone else. While I'm there a new Viper pulls in and a bunch of Evo's, a few 3rd gens etc...

So we're waiting to see this race but I got fed up and a few of us decided to leave and get something to eat. I leave first and the viper pulls out after me. I'm on pump gas (e85) and 20psi. The damn crowd then starts following. It just so happens we end up on the stretch where they race. He pulls alongside and it waiting for me to go. I drop into 2nd and have him by a half a car. Hit 3rd and started pulling away and once I hit 4th we had to slow down.

We did that about 3 more times with the same results but the viper was pretty fast, I was surprised. Even in 3rd he was pretty close. On our last race I pulled him by a car in 2nd and when I hit 3rd, the car redlined. The tranny broke when I hit 3rd. It sounded like all the damn teeth fell of the gears! IThe car still drove home in 5th but I've never broken a tranny like that just driving the car with street tires on low boost.

Also the car seemed to be pulling to the right in 4th under power. I don't have a front sway bar but that should not matter since the car was going straight. I have a new alignment too, maybe my car is too low with the tein springs.

Anthony

Good job on teaching that Viper a lesson

only yesterday I was talking to a truck driver about the "local" spots. He's part of the Honda crew :

Hey Anthony if you're looking to murder another Viper let me know.. I have a Trini padna on LI with a older model R/T that thinks rotarys are slow

He also got a stroked SBS in a 80's slant nose porsche with spray... I offered to run him a few years ago with my 1st gen, but he didn't take the bait

3rd gear is the one you'll break (unless you're dumb and use the go pedal in 5th, then that'll break).

it can take the pounding for a while but eventually you'll rip the teeth off.

Redline shockproof heavy in the next trans will make it live longer.

Talked to the guy afterward, bone stock. This is the first tranny in a few years that I have broken. I have a slippier clutch and run 10.5 tires at the track, not 11.5 so I've been lucky.

Yeah it was something, the tranny should not have broken on a shift like that. Ernie or others usually break them in power. Plus I was on 20psi which makes low hp on my car. I'm waiting on Enzo to call me and say "bring the money, I got your tranny" hahahaha....

Aaron, as for your boy, is his name Mario with a blue Viper?

Nope, his name is Ismael and he own's a body shop on Merrick.. Red 1st gen Viper with a retarded looking scoop on the removable top

He also that V8 powered Slant nose on the bottle. The last time I spoke to him he was removing the bottle and going with twins. It was already a death trap at 600hp, now he's aiming for more

BTW, all of this is mated to a fully built Porsche transaxle..

Aaron, Ish put the twin turbos on the porche a while ago now, its a sick sick thing. i'm not sure if he still has the viper, but he moved the shop. he's on peninsula blvd in hempstead now. he took over a shop from a friend that passed away. it used to be pro speed. now its advanced auto.

and anthony, loud mouth mario has a yellow viper now that my sources tell me has been seen at enzo's place....

I remember being at Bert's shop a few times back when I had my dsm like 12 years ago.

Mario owns the yellow viper as well as a sc vette and some others and Mario's brother owns a viper too which is blue or black dont remember but both are not stock by any means so I doubt Ant raced any of them. They are in the LI exotic crowd that usually like to race on sunday mornings. I see them pretty often.

I actually raced Mario before, I know Mario and Carlos from way back in the days, since they had their rotaries. I'm one of the few guys he says that beat him. Ask him when you see him. Remind him it happened on Francis Lewis and he was on nitrous...

I'm on the same tranny for about 4 years but then again I'm making around 500HP and only made a few passes closer to 600. He wants to run again so will get video this time.

Pics of busted 3rd....

I guess after the teeth broke off the tranny sounded perfect and made no noise, it was just missing 3rd gear. There is also something around those gears thats not pictured, it looks like its made to keep oil around the gears and also keep broken pieces out.

Hmm. I have the parts of a transmission that look exactly like that. A 3rd gear and c-shaft and it's good to go.
