Air intake idea?

I know this could go under single turbo section but I feel its more of a drag racing issue.

I have been sucking HOT air in from day one. I just dont have much room to work with. After the last few very hot track events I figured it was time to work on an idea I had. Tell me what you think. I have more work to do but you get the idea from the pics. I have never worked with fiberglass so cut me a little slack. I made a ducted to fit perfectly inside the running passenger running light, had to remove the headlight and fab up a brace to hold the cover inplace. Mine is cracked around the mounting holes so it didnt bother me that I had to rivet them to the brace. he compressor duct I made fits very snug so no clamp needed. Just have to finish sanding the insides and coat. Also make the last connecting pipe between the other two.

nice setup, its gotta be be better than a kick in the *****, just make sure you have a mate who can stand in front of your scoop and act a a blocker if another racer is doing the burnout in front of you, as its a sure fire way to get a piece of rubber flung up into the front of your turbo , and buy buy turbo blades .
Just as long as he can handle bits of rubber flung at him too haha

never been to a track were the guy infront of you gets to burn rubber on your ride?

I will run a filter on the streets but not on the track.

Besides I need a good reason to buy a monster turbo

yeh even at our track when you are a good 5+ car lengths away from the car thats staging infront of you i still notice small bits of debris hitting the front of me car .
Ihave been told from another rota racer at our track that one of his turbos failed because of ingesting some burnout rubber ***** from a car infront , hence why he has a foam insert that gets removed before his run

I may have to give the foam thing a try. , My local track is a 90 degree from staging lanes to track. Montgomery is like you said above but the cars are way back.

SK, this is the exactly same Idea I have for my fd when I get back home. I have a feed bumper with 99 headlights so I have a bit more inlet than you do.

What I'm going to do with the headlight cover is used a old headlight bracket, obviously take off the motor and trim it down and bolt it in, if that doesnt work(fit) I'd build a bracket like what your going to do.
You could just run a mesh on the front of the inlet or in-between where the fibreglass and turbo piping meet. Prevention is better than cure.

edit: Ahh ... I see you have a mesh on the turbo already.. good stuff

Good idea Mike.

How about your side air scoop and this radiator side scoop supplying cool air to a 9" K&N ?

Barry, I remember you giving me a hard time about no filter and sucking in hot air also!

I don't have anymore room. Just going to connect the 2 pipes and go with that on the track. There is a mesh screen in the top pipi to catch large objects. Top pipe pops off very easy so I can run my filter on the streets but when I go to the track it's a 30sec swap.

Yea Mike, its scary the size rocks that I find trying to get past the filter.

I also use a secondary inlet through the bumper strut by removing a doubler plate and using a hole saw to make cut-outs on the top "palate side" of the mouth opening. (it doesen't quite show in this first picture).

I usually run 4deg C above ambient with my small PFS IC. Temps always drop on a pull because of the meth/water.

For you Indian:

I have been thinking about a meth kit but just like to keep it as simple as possible. Maybe I will spary a small shot of nitrous.

hey Sk8 just an idea, but these guys http://www.velocity-of-sound.com/com...egory=+++GO!++ have some nice and well-priced bellmouths with a lip on them for a large air filter or clamping the mesh. having the bellmouth at the end of your turbo inlet pipe just helps get air into the inlet vs. just a straight cut pipe.

Not sure how much of a difference it will make, but I had one on my last turbo for the same reason (take the filter off at the track)

Mike,
I'm building a cold air intake also....I have a scoot hood (it has a scoop). I bought a 90 degree coupler to go on the turbo that is turmed towards the middle of the engine bay and I have another 90 that will turn up right in front of the alternator. I have a piece of 4" aluminum pipe to connect the 2 90's. I am cutting a hole in the hood but it'll be under the overlap of the scoop. I am planning to get it done before the IFO in Columbus.
I was thinking, since my system (and yours) will be like a ram air system, will the boost want to creep up with 100+mph air being forced in?

Sounds nice Bobby, make sure you post some pics up.

Not sure on the creep being an issue. I wouldnt think it would be that bad since most pro cars run there turbos right out front..

Also doubt I will make the IFO event. You should come down and visit your family in Nov. (14th to be exact)..

I am sure your nephew will be there. So how you liking the tranny?

Really liking the tranny. Only ran 3 1/8 mile runs with it but the lights were out so I don't know how well I ran? I should have my intake done by end of next week. I'll get some pics up. I'll come down if I'm in the low 10's

I can't enlarge the thumbnails. You can see the polished pipe through the hole. I plugged the back side of the scoop so air will be forced down the intake. I was really happy with the way this turned out. I think it will be very functional.

Yeah Bobby, I like what you did! Intake temps should drop! You racing this weekend?

I wish I could have used silicon off my turbo but the angle my radiator angle wouldn't let me.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks. I have a screen at the turbo and I have a piece of "outerware" cloth closer to the hood. I am concerned about sucking in junk but the 2 screens should work, Yes I am racing tomorrow. I got my boost issue corrected with the car and I think it really pulls hard now. Can't wait for the races. Car is loaded and the slicks are already on.
