Wheels!

I whipped up a wheel in SolidWorks today - It's about 18-19" in diameter (19.xxx to the outside of the lip). Thought some of you might enjoy it.

estimated weight in aluminum is 31lbs (whoops! i'll have to play around with it some more ), and the max side loading is ~4.7g's (not enough -- needs work)

estimated weight in magnesium is 19.75lbs (now we're talkin'!) and the max side loading is ~11.5g's (that should be fine)

Interesting

Wow those enkei's are similar - surprising, because I just did that 'free hand' Too bad they don't come in the right bolt circle.

Here's another shot of the wheel with a few little details changed. It's about 30% stronger and 1lb heavier. Now to make the spokes hollow

More tinkering!

I made a slightly different design today. This model allows me to set the offset, change the radius (curvature) of the spokes, change the diameter, and change the depth of the lip. Weight for the wheel (17x9.5) is about 17.5lbs. If anybody knows how to use FEA / help me calculate whether or not it'll fall apart, let me know . Let me know what you think

Here's the backside of the wheel, showing some of the reliefs i put in there (they drop weight about 3 lbs). I got another 3 lbs off by cutting out a some of the rim where the spoke meets up with it.

Hey M5150 - what program did you use to render that -- looks great!

moprblms - I used SolidWorks2003 for the drawings

did you use this same program to calculate the weight, strength etc?

Yep! Solidworks lets you input a density for the material you're using, and calculates weight off of that. The strength analysis program that solidworks uses isn't ver good though -- I'm going to have a friend run some numbers with another program to see what it comes up with.

As a bit of a side note, the wheels would be about 12.5 lbs (for a 17x9.5" wheel!) if made out of magnesium, and they'd be stronger too
