what companies make the best.....

i have an 89 gtu. im getting a rebuilt engine put in and i want to sup this thing up. it is an N/A and i want it to remain street legal. i'm new to this and don't know what companies make the best parts for an rx7. this is what im looking at so far.......

exhaust - most likely racing beat. is a cat-back set up the only way to go to keep it street legal?

ECU - i have no clue where to look for this or what to look for.

intake - ???????????????????????

i sort of know what exhaust system i want and thats basically all i know. any suggestions, opinions, or thoughts on any of this would be a great help.

After you do all youre research on ecu's, stop and take a look at the mega squirt. The price is too good to get anything else! There is a section on this forum for it now too.

I think he is probably talking about something more along the lines of a chip, rather than a stand-alone unit.

Your best bet would be trying to find an S-AFC II if you want to tune the car, but do not want the complexity of a full stand-alone unit. If you decide that you are willing to go the extra mile, then I agree that a megasquirt is going to be the most budget friendly option. Used Microtech ECU's can also be had for a good price.

As far as your intake goes, you will want to get a cone filter, and either build a cold air box around it, or route aluminum piping down into the inner fender to create a true cold-air-intake.

The legality of your exhaust will probably depend on the laws in your state. You might be able to get away with a full header and catback as long as you retain some sort of catalytic converter. I would check with the shop where you will be getting it inspected to see what they would pass.

If there are any terms that you do not understand, or would like more information on, using the search function will yield you a ton of results.

does anyone make an ECU, stand alone or not, that is already programed and is basically a "plug and play". my main goal is to remove the top speed limiter and the rev limiter, get better gas milage and make more power. i don't know anything about programing those things, i want it to be as easy as possible.

Stand alone ECU's are not plug and play, which is most of the reason for getting one. They are completely programmable by the user, which is important because every setup is different. No one, to my knowledge, does any ECU upgrades that would be worthwhile. Get an Apex'i S-AFC II and take your car to a dyno (with a competent tuner)... if it is tuned correctly, then you will make more power and get better gas mileage. You do not have a top speed limiter. The presence of a rev limiter was debated a while back, and I do not recall the final verdict. In either case, there is no reason to disable it because your car's power starts to drop off pretty heavily around that RPM range unless you have some type of porting done. "As easy as possible" will never be very easy unless you have money pouring out of your pockets. Speed can be easy, but easy will never be cheap. Unless you can pay someone to do all of the work for you, I would not reccomend modifying your car unless you are prepared to learn to do things the right way. RX-7's can be very rewarding to own, and especially to drive, but it usually comes with the fact that they require more attention and maintenance than some other cars.

so after i do the exhaust, the cone filter in a cold air box, and add the Apex'i S-AFC II, what comes next?

Apex ECU is much more better compare to microtech, i switch my ecu on my FC from microtech to Apex and i do see an increase of 10 HP during the dyno.

wtf? The microtech is a fully tunable standalone. The safc apexi is a piggy back, and can only manipulate the stock ecu so far. That make no sense, you would see more power w/the microtech, properly tuned of course.

He's talking about the Power FC, not the S-AFC.
Apex'i PFC is a stand alone.

I meant "good luck" above. Also, if you picked up 10 hp, its just because you had more agressive tuning with the PFC, not because it is somehow better than the microtech.
