Transverse mounted rotary
Transverse mounted rotary
Any reason why I couldn't run a 12A mounted to a transverse transaxle (Thats a whole lotta trans
)? I'm looking mainly for oil starvation problems. I'm trying to decide which kit (Well home-built actually) car I want to build. I'd really like to go with a rotary, but I love the idea of a mid-engined car. I could mate it too a VW transaxle but that would make the entire assembly rather longer that I'd like. If anyone has any theories on this one I'd like to hear them.
I may just take the easier route and build a front-engined car, but I seem to be cursed with a life-long case of indecision and I fear I won't really know what I'm building until it comes time to start cutting.

It can be done. I have not seen a FWD car but I used to race with a guy that put a 13b in an old Porsche 914. It was transversely mounted. But space was an issue and if I remember correctly the motor actualy sat about 15 deg. from being truly trans. mounted.
I have posted to a local forum where sombody might remember a name or have a photo of it. I will post back if I find any more information.

P.S. The 914 is a mid engine car in that the engine and transmission sit behind the driver. Is it possible you have the wrong Porsche in mind?
check this link its being done before

It's a transaxle meaning that the transmission and axles are all one unit. Most rotary conversions in the 914 use an adapter to mate the rotary engine to the stock 914 transmission. I'm putting a 20b in my car and have done my research. The only way that he would have an engine transversely mounted in the 914 would be if he had a different transmission and that I highly doubt was done because the cost and complexity would be too much for most people when there is a perfectly logical solution by going with the adapter and stock Porsche transmission.

You have cast doubt in my mind so now I am only 80% sure it was transversely mounted. I have got the guys name from the local SCCA forum so now I am trying to contact him directly. I will press for more information.
Here is a link to a rotary powered 914. It uses the stock north/south layout.

On a related note, can you bolt a 12A to a Miata tranny? Miata's share an engine with the 90-99 Protege, which means I could use a Protege transaxle without any sort of adaptor if it all lined up.
