Transmissions....

Well, as soon as the house sells, I will be venturing into a new transmission.

I have spoke to the guys at Guru Racing quite a bit concerning their 5spd box, and have been leaning toward this.

Yet, I am curious to read up on some of the other brands available.

Here is my specs, and lets go from there:

1) 1995 RX-7
2) Haltech E6K, with 1600cc's etc. etc.
3) Single turbo. I believe I am going to run with the XS T04S turbo.
4) Engine Porting: Mild Streetport.
5) The car is a weekend warrior. I run it at the 1320 as well as the road racing courses each month. Lots of street racing as well, with general driving for fun. I usually average (when car is running and nice weather) 200 miles a weekend; alot of it is abuse.

The GuruRacing box is a 5 speed, and has the following ratios:

1 2.852
2 1.847
3 1.278
4 1
5 .852

I am really curious on how that 1st gear will play out. It seems as if it will have much more use... But how much?

I am looking to make 450 rwhp or more at 16-17 psi on 100octane unleaded gas.

As of right now, I still have to decide on:

1) Engine Port.
2) Tranmission.
3) Turbo package.

Any personal experience would be appreciative.

Thanks,

Mike

For the kind of power you are looking for, you definitely don't need a dog gear box with straight cut gears. It's load, unnecessary and expensive.

Get your car running... if you end up blowing your transmision (doubtful), then upgrade it. I personally wouldn't go with the guru gear set. I dont know ANYONE that is running them for starters... doesn't mean they are bad... but who knows.... I would personally opt for a Geforce tranny with H-Gate shifter and clutch assist... Cost is about the same, maybe cheaper and will hold GOBS AND GOBS of torque....

my 2 cents.

A dogbox is the way to go! Strong, a much quicker shift and really cool. I am in Sydney (Australia) and use a Guru gearset (dog) in my Gen 3.

I know many racers over here use the Guru stuff, not sure about the US but I think they are only just starting to market them over there and the UK (I saw them at a recent trade show in the UK).

Many performance shops are trying to stock them over here as they are a much more supportable, quality product than others on the market and they use the standard case so fitment is easy (and within many street drag rules)! A big drag shop in Melbourne I have heard (Maztech is starting to want to push them into many front running drag dars). So now might be the time to get involved if you are interested.

re your question on 'over' use of 1st, I have no probs with it, it makes for excellent takeoffs, 2nd is real close and it is still easy to drive on the road and for my weekend street drags etc

ps. my brother uses one in his gen 1 racecar (he put me onto this forum) but he uses the other ratios, 5th is 1-1 etc I think it is called a 'circuit box'

my 2 ozzie cents worth :-)

Thanks for the reponses thus far.

Currently, I am in need of a transmission.. Thats why I am considering this. What appeals to me, is the fact that it is a direct 'bolt' in. No fabs for new bell housings or drive shafts, etc.

Any other kits that do that too? I am still leaning toward the Guru set.

Thanks,

Mike
