Question Transmission

Hello again.

I have been doing some searching and haven't come up with a positive result. What is the shortest [manual] transmission that came in an RX-7? Or even, what transmission could I use with an adapter plate that is shorter than an RX transmission? The goal is to move the engine back, but keep the shifter as close to the stock location as possible. This will also determine which engine to use (POSSIBLY). Thanks again for the help. Just racking up on the research for when I finally get my car (the search function is great, but really specific sometimes!).

Jose

If you are going turbo use an 87-91 Turbo RX7 transmission and you can move the shifter forward 4 inches ( or 104 mm ) which is a straight forward affair, if you really need to up to 6 inches with some clever work , I have set one in the past at almost 6 inches forward and the only hard part to modify as I said was securing the shifter tower. I dont know what your plans are and what chassis this is going in but you can do this with almost every ( not all ) 1st gen RX7 and all 2nd rx7 transmissions. It will save you a lot of $$$$$ than going to a different trans .if you intend on more than 5-6 inches look into modifying a Ford Mustang T-5 trans in an S10 truck T-5 case which has a mid mount shifter and use a Kennedy adapter plate with either an old school bellhousing or a Turbo RX7 , lots to think about mate !!!!!!!!!!

You're gong to make more work for yourself and thinking too far out of the box. Your best bet would be to make shifter linkage that would go to the "stock" location. Using another transmission will change too many things; clutch, driveshaft, gearing, ext...

since the S2000 and Rx8 use a similar transmission, there is a possibility of using the S2000 tail housing and shaft on the Rx8 trans, or maybe the Rx8 bell housing on the S2000 trans.

Thanks for the info! This helps a lot! I was looking to go back about 4", so this just might be my perfect set-up that I didn't even know!

That may be true, but if it's a dedicated track car, there is no such thing as 'too far' (unless rules are broken. lol).

Interesting. A 6 speed would be nice...
