Tranny Adapters !!

How much do these Tranny's weigh? Are the much heavier than the FD transmision? I may be interested but there is so many variables right now, like price, console fitment, wiring harnesses, driveshafts, RPM limitations (shifitng at 7500 is not that high to me), and clutch/flywheel assemblies. This seems like it would add up to a ton of money. I will probably just go with the FD made tranny from Greddy. Ease of mind.
Also, are the FD transmisions that notorious for failing in higher HP cars? What does Ari and those guys run?

I wish I was driving!
I'm kinda curious why a "Viper" transmission is so hyped up.
Let's look at overall gear ratios for first and second for a stock TII:
14.28, 8.26
Lets look at overall gear ratios for first and second for a Viper spec tranny:
10.906, 7.298
So, to retain stock accelration... you would need a rear end ratio of around 5.36:1, otherwise... bye bye acceleration. And honestly.. who is gonna cut a set of gears to fit our stock read-ends without HUGE pricing?
As for $8000 cost... D&D makes one for $3000.
I think this is more a mod for how cool it is to have an extra gear. The only one who looks like he's put any thought into this is Red-RX7.
And the Richmond is what I would be going with as well.

The shifter would be up in the radio area.
BUT!!!! I think I have a solution.... Use the MOPAR unit. The GM units go ~28".. Which is a about 2-3" short. The MOPAR case distance is about ~30".
So, I think this is the closest we can get into the deal. The shifter would be about .5" to 1" too short.
More research to come in the working week!

Hahaha!
I would like the 6spd for the close gear ratios.. keeps me in the powerband.
I also need a unit that is super strong for the 20B. So, it works out for best worlds.

The Richmond transmissions are an excellent option, though, especially since you can tailor your gear selection to match your application and aren't stuck with a "one-size fits most" choice of ratios.
They do, however, have external shifter rails, so that is one consideration to keep in mind, and they aren't especially lightweight.

It depends on what you select for gear ratios.
I am making the first gear much taller, so it is actually usable.
In the demo gear ratios we have talked about, max speed is like 167. I may change this, but it kind of works for me.
By having 6 gears, it gives me much more choices at various speeds to select the power band needed.
That, and maybe, just maybe, I could save a little gas roaming in 6th!

Shiiiiiiiiittttt. I just did a speedometer indicated speed of 83mph in 2nd gear today. I'll even back it up with a vid. Have no idea what the rpm was due to stock being limited to 8.3k. 3rd gear redlines at 120mph. Again vid will show. Speedo could be off.?

Jerico Adapeter
Im not sure on this but I believe that a Jerico tranny has the same typical "american style" tranny bolt pattern, so this means you can buy their "mazda" adapter for only $275. I have one on my Jerico and have it on my 12a, and it bolts up to a turbo or rx-4 type bellhousing. Check out a pic I took at http://www.ammarsgallery.com/tranny
I hope this might help!!

I believe the hurst shifter fouond on the SS camaros with the T56 would pull the shifter out of the radio, and back a bit farther. I also think that with a 20b you would have a wide enough power band that the extra gearing and the 4.10 rear end would be an acceptible match up as far as aceleration goes. Anything much lower and you'll need to be running ET Streets just to gain some semblance of traction.

The rear subframe is modified to cradle the rear of the transaxle. The floor is cut away to make room. The main hoop of the roll cage is used as the front mount for the transaxle. Torque tube is sectioned for correct length, and lastly the axles are splined together, one side C5 spines, the other side rx7 splines.
The need for an adaptor comes from the fact that, I have a C5 bellhousing that bolts to the tourqe tube.
A custom motor cradle that lowers the motor and brings it back about 6 inches is possible now that the tranny is not in the way.
Fuel cell is moved from behind the rear axle to in front of it, Right over the transaxle.
Reason I dident buy a vett.
Target weight of stripped, lightened 7, ~2100 lbs
This is in the works, its not a pipe dream, the tranny is at the fabricator getting mated to the subframe.

This is exactly what i was planning to do. I've been roadracing my 93 rx7 full cage, etc. since 97 and plan to make it more competitive, and I was planning the v8 swap. With the transaxle the weight distribution would be excellent. Do you have any pics you could post?
Any obstacles worth mentioning would be an asset too.

20 years ago, my friend and I cut an adapter plate out of 1/2 in aluminum to mate a 2l Ford (Pinto) engine to a 5 speed from a HO Mustang. It cost all of $10 dollars for the plate, and $20 to have it cut out at a machine shop.
$750 for a conversion plate seems a bit high, for that price you can try a DIY first and havle plenty of cash left.

What about making an adaptor to fit a TII transmission with the RENESIS engine? The 6-speed transmission on the RX-8, which I believe is nearly identical with the MX-5's, is notoriously weak. I would definitely consider this if this were real.
