thinking about going msd
thinking about going msd
Does anybody have any comments about using the msd ignitons with msd coils?? I dont want the jacobs nor the hks twin power. Does anybody know of the best place to buy the msd for a good price??
I uses Cran Hi6 with matching LX92 CDI coil for each Leading plug.
It works like a charm, the only down side is taht it is so strong a spark that it melts ground and center electodes about 20 times faster than a transistor ignition, I have a customer car with twin MSD6A boxes & blaster coils and it does not "abuse" the plugs as much (nowhere near as much enery as the Hi6 & LX92 coil per plug).
I use B11EGV plugs for the street (RA series for racing), and the car will start and idle for ever with out fouling in every weather condition, and fire the richest of fuel mixtures (and grades) with no trouble at all. While allowing the use of racing heat range plugs that will not suffer from preignition under road racing conditions.
The only down side is that a set of plugs is worn out in about 5000km or 3000miles (not enough ground electode material left to regap), I regap the plugs every 1000 Km cause with a non Platinum ground electode they just wear out real quick with the "energy" supplied by the Crane ignition combination.
Which ever CDI unit or units you get make sure you get the matching CDI coils, and check other peoples opinions (experienced ones) running similar combinations, I went with the Crane cause there was some conjecture about the Autronic unit I was looking at, later found out that some guys use the Crane LX92 coil with the Autronic unit with good success (did not know this at the time!) But I like to keep brands the same, either way good luck with your choise, from my experience with the MSD 6A blaster combo, it is no where near as powerfull as the Crane Hi 6 and LX92 coil based on plug wear.

I absolutely LOVE my MSD!
Yes it eats plugs... on the other hand with the MSD you have enough spark energy that the system is more tolerant of worn out spark plugs = you get greater real-life lifespan from the plugs. Of course I was not running scads of boost and spraying a third of a liter of water per minute in the engine, either
My "useful" plug life went up from about 3,000 miles with noticeable deterioration along the way to... well I had one set of plugs in the car for 15,000 miles (25k km) and I detected no difference after finally changing them. They looked like absolute hell though!
This was using an MSD 6AL on the leading ignition, driving a pair of MSD Blaster 2 coils.

am i right at this, becuase I dont know anything about ignition. There are 3 coils right, 2 leading and one trialing?? Will I need 3 msd amps or just 2?? Sence I have a Haltech e6k I woundnt need the 6AL just the 6a?? I think the only differences is 6al has rev limiter or something like that.
