Rotor housing, odd texture on surface, has anyone ever seen this?

It it possible we missed some premix, however the rest of the surfaces (irons, other seals) all looked very well lubricated....but I can not rule it out as the cause.
I'm not being very scientific about this at all, but my gut instinct is that ferrous non-Mazda seals require more oil than Mazda.

I've done maybe 10k on Atkins cryo seals, we'll see what it looks like when I tear the engine down this winter for new side seals and oil control seals (ahem) but I run about 100:1 in daily driving/highway use and run about 60:1 in competition use. Plus all of the added oil every time I let off the throttle at high RPM

ealry rotors in late housings do clash,, given enough heat and rpm and tolerance in the bearings
( and i have some pics somewhere to illustrate thus )
the differences in the inner dimensions of the housings are in the poofteeenth of an inch,, something no eye will distinguish

however,, plainly you was running 2mm rotors,, in 2mm housings,, and should never have had an issue

-- are those housings remanufactured ones?
are those housings from new stock,, i wonder if mazda is now making the retro spares with nikaseal linings?
( which are having some issues will galling and seperation/ cracking )

however only other suggestions i can make is that the fuel has been contaminated
( get a sample and see if it separates any solids if left to sit,, consider an anyalsis )

or perhaps,, you was running high doses of toluene for fuel== lack of lube

personally i run only OMP and dry LPG fuel,, and dont have galling issues

Damian, check page TT-5 of the Mazda Competition Manual. It looks like you ran into a bad case of tolerance stack! This is where the indexing of the gears is offset just enough to decrease that clearance below the .018"-.030" required. It may have worked with the rotors reversed or another 3rd gen rotor.

There were not any noticable marks on the housings to suggest the rotors were hitting, however maybe it was just enough to pull metal off the rotors and make this odd texture on the housing surface? ...i am just speculating?

Did both rotors have the wear shown in the quote posted above mine?

Quality of mazda parts is just crap,I see new housings all the time that are knowhere near the same size and shape to others, worst case I have seen 0.5mm difference in inner shape!!!it was 0.5mm smaller all around the whole inner of the housing!!
The rotors have been touching the housings and it appears that the grey specs are the remains of soft steel apex seals, they leave a deposit like in the photos when they have been cooked.

Agree with the above post.

Lots of the new housings we get. we check them before fitting them. especially around the spark plug area, very uneven.

In some engines. We have had to stone brand new housings. And in some cases, we dont end up using them.
