I am a Mopar man by choice but a Ford man by necessity - there being a great shortage of cheap Mopars to play with. But Mopars are tall deck, heavy engines, that aren't too cheap to build, so I wouldn't consider one for an engine swap.

The "ideal" R/S ratio is 1.75:1. I have heard of a destroked 289 Ford with Chevy rods. Yikes. R/S ratio of 2.1:1. A wee bit much

You can't argue with the 327's though. They were pulling over 700hp from 327's in the early 70's, no forced induction.

I call bs on that. Anyway, if I was going to build a small block chevy again, I'd take a 400 and stick a 327 crank in it to get a 348. It would wind up like a 302 and have more torque than a 327. It would also be the perfect canidate for twin turbos.

Then again, I think you should just get a jspec s5 turbo II engine, 60-1 turbo, greddy fmic, haltech e6k.

If you're going to call BS, don't tell me. Tell Grumpy Jenkins. The number I see most of the time is 711hp.

Mmmm... destroked 400s. Now we're talking.

Okay, if you're talking Grumpy or another legendary dragstrip tuner then yeah, I believe that. Prolly straight from his white chevy II w/ L79 327.

You made it sound like any backyard racer was making 700HP. hehe

Get your self a Mopar 360 block, stroke it out to a 426, then pick your self up one of those hemi head kits from here http://www.rodandcustommachines.com/...hemiheads.html

426-hemi small block baby. Heh
I might do that very thing for my duster, but I have the stock 340 still and its all # matching. So I don’t know yet. Maybe I can talk my dad in to doing that for his 70 cuda

As for the 7, I would go with a rotary. 13bt or a 20b, would be some fun.

I'm really starting to concider of just getting a 5.0 LX and i know for a fact that with just some simple mods like intake and exhaust i can be running mid 13's if i can get the traction that is. That would be a hell of a lot more streetable than a bridgey and quicker and would eat less fuel since it still would be fuel injected.

My sh*t gets like 11mpg and makes tones of noise, coming out of the hall at a stop light is a b*tch too. It's fun at first but then you get tired of it, if at least for the noise it was making it would have been quicker but it's not, not at least as quick as i want to be. Got tired of always revving that sh*t up all the time and popping clutches, i just want to hit the gas and be wholling ***.

Screw all that get a Ls1, a t-56 and a engine mount kit from hinsonsupercars.com, stock ls1 and 6 speed would put you in the low 12's with 325HP 335 TQ. Screw the rotory it'll only last you what 50-60K miles and that ls1 will run 230,000 miles no problem with regular oilchanges. oh and the ls1 weighs 90 pounds more than a stock 13brew with all the turbo and piping.

this thread is crap! the rx7 and the rotary is a unique package, hand in glove, shouldn't be any other way so don't change it! there must be another forum for this kind of pik 'n' mix BS. After all we suffer with our rotaries, surely if it wasn't for that uniqueness why would we bother? we could all jus go out and start puttin all kinds of crap in the bays, jus wouldn't be fair on all that struggled to keep the wankin wankel alive!

This is the rotary performance section so I think everyone is going to go towards the rotary, including me.

Smile More info on eng. swaps PLEASE

I have an '85 RX-7 with a locked up 13 B eng. Because of the cost and difficulty of finding rotary engs. I simply want to put in a 6 cyl, modify as little as possible and be back on the road. Thanks for any input. G.

You'd be better off sticking with a rotary mainly because it's a lot easier to install. No mods! If you go with a piston engine; ANY piston engine, you'll spend way more time, effort, and money trying to fit it.

Please trust me when I say it's a fair bit of work simply pulling the stock 12A from an '84 RX-7, tearing it down, rebuilding it, and putting it back in. Then having it fire up to life for for the first time is a feeling like no other. If you get another rotary for your car, instead of rebuild the old one, it'll take even less time than it took me. You can forget about all the costly, time consuming mods too.

If you're in need of a 13B, you've come to the right place. Many people here will know where you can get a good one for a decent price.

Welcome to the forum!

You have a 240Z, you should know that the bodies are absurdly weak. We can twist my friend's 240Z (also a '73, and it will never have anything but an L24... probably a heavily modified L24, but 2.4l six nonetheless) with hand pressure. And it's rust free, solid floor, not the typical pile of excrement that is mostly street signs held on to rust with Pop-Rivets, see-through floors, non running, and the owner still thinks he can get $1500 for it. (And he gets it too!)

Z cars are just sooooo hard to find in decent shape. They're like 1st-gen Camaros and Mustangs, people are frowning on people modifying them and taking great pains to return them to stock.

If you must modify a Z, do it to a 280Z 2+2. It'll already have the beefy rear diff, and it was ugly and slow to begin with anyway.

RX-7 is a much better chassis than the Z for handling power, IMO. Plus there is no shortage of solid cars that have already been bastardized by kids whose first instinct is "rip out the rats nest LOL" and then they sell the car for $300 because they can't get it to run right, or they hurt something in the process.

For the guy who said that the rotary will only last 50-60K, what the hell are you doing here?? Anyone with half a brain can read thru this forum and see rotaries that have 100K or even 200K on them....WITHOUT rebuilds in some cases.....True, a V8 will be more reliable for bigger power, but give us a break already. If you dont know what the hell youre talking about, then maybe you shouldnt be doing the talking. My 86 GXL has 90K original on it--does that mean that mine's gonna blow up on me tomorrow???

As far as swapping out the rotary, I still dont get those of you who hafta get on someone's **** cuz they talk about doing it....go back to the main page of this forum and read the description of what the "Rotary Performance" section is for. This kind of stuff is what this section is for so get over yourselves already and get a hobby. Personally, i dont like the idea of chucking the rotary either, but it's HIS car, not yours.

Besides, lots of us like the 7 cuz it is different than everything else out there......so why give someone hell for wanting to do something even more different? Here--let's see how many of you turbo guys drop **** for this--I am putting a SUPERCHARGER ON MY 86 GXL!!!

There....now those of you with no life will have something to do for the next couple days....

IMHO, I would like to see how it comes out, but keep in mind that before you can go 250 you hafta be able to STOP again. What you are talking about will cost you tons of cash. Ask yourself what you intend to do with the car....if you go too far in mods to keep the car streetable and comfortable, what is the point? A fast driver is one thing, but a VERY fast race car is another.

oh, and I have done 200 in a car. I jump out of planes for fun, and that scared the **** out of me....it was on the highway, and you have no idea how fast everything goes by at that speed. Did it once...will NEVER do it again. The smallest bump in the road can ruin your whole day...

My original 12a motor had about 160k and i was still racing it when i took it out. Stock they can last forever, however, if making a decent amount of power (and that would be of course with forced induction and porting) they would only last 50-60k. I'm not even going to be talking about bridgeports, for the 230 hp you are going to be making at 7k rpm and be lucky if the motor would last 20k miles.

I pretty much knew what i was getting myself into when i did mine but i was just crazy about the brap brap brap sound. Now i realize that i don't just want the noise, i want power and drivability.

I still think it would be cool to have a rota powered vehicle that can put a smack down on any suped up v8 on the street but we are talking major bling bling here and all the trouble and problems of forced induction. And knowing my luck i know i'm going to have problems.

well, I DID hear that the next RX7 was to have a 400 hp version....not sure how accurate that is, but can't wait til 2006 to find out!! Can you imagine--that kind of power but with our handling and weight?? and STOCK?? man I think I need to lie down now lmao

PwRFreaK...rotaries last a freaking long time. My uncle Joe has an FB...over 400,000 miles on it, he mantained it better then the dealership he bought it from in 79. If you take care of your car it'll last long then expected :P

I can't spend very long on an answer for you this time, but I'd recommend searching this site for some engine rebuilders in your area. Give them the info on your car. Then arrange for shipping of a rebuilt engine to you.

When the rebuilt engine arrives, the only work you'd need to do would be to pull your old 13B out of your car, remove all the stuff untill it's down to a 'shortblock', swap everything over to the rebuilt 13B, and then install it into you car. If you do it right, you won't have to mod anything. It can be accomplished rather quickly, if you know what you're doing (it could be done in an afternoon). Otherwise, a piston engine will ruin the car. It will end up being sold to a wrecker or something. Believe me; it happens.

superchargers i would like to c one since its different and still rotary, but i would keep mine turbo since its cheaper and the rotary is made for turbo.

well the way I see the average street racer would feel worse getting beat by a 1.3 liter than a 5.7 Either way you go the car will haul butt, but think of the mods you'll have to do to shoe horn a 350 in there.

how sure ar eyou that Restore did this to your engine?? If you could find a way to prove it, I would say call up the company that makes it....perhaps you will not have to pay for your rebuild After all, I have seen that stuff, and it is supposed to be used in engines. If an engine additive killed an engine, imagine the leverage you could have......heh heh heh

I dont know about being "made" for turbo as opposed to a sc.....yours already has the turbo on it, but the engine works well with forced induction no matter which one it comes from. I am not going to use one of those atkins kits either--I want to keep my EFI, and theirs isn't done yet. I will be using my car as a test bed to figure out how to set up an Eaton M90 charger. I will be removing my air pump and mounting it on that side of the engine bay. Once I get it all figured out and tuned(this is going to be a long project people so dont flip out on me when it takes time!) I will post everything here for those of you who have posted threads about this. I have already found a forum member who lives near me that is willing to help when the time comes--he runs a fabrication shop so I will be needing a TON of help from him lol anyway I will keep you posted
